Is it time for a sock puppet scrapage scheme?

I'd far prefer some incentives to repair our existing white goods rather than scrap them and buy new. The carbon footprint of scrapping/recycling/replacing must be far higher than the energy saved by using a "cleaner" newer model for just a few years of its life before it too is scrapped.

How about reduced or zeroised VAT on replacement parts and labour for starters?

The old refrain of "it'll cost more to repair than replace" is far too common and needs to be turned around to encourage repairs and longer life.

Trouble is the replacement stuff hasn't got as much life in it as the older items. It has got cheaper over the years but something has got to give to enable this, and it shows a lot of the time with things going bang a month after the warranty has expired. Finish & quality went out the window years ago.
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

Sometimes I get drunk, come up with an idea, write it down, and go to bed. The next morning I read it, and usually think it's nonsense. Labour need to stop binge drinking.

This is a much more sensible and moneysaving solution. It provides local employment for collection and repair as well as saving people money. Am I wrong in thinking many white goods are made far away and hence this suggested scheme, although providing retail employment, does little for UK manufacturing.

It does little for the environment either. They tell us the newer machines are more efficient, which i'm sure is true. But is there really a saving in the amount of CO2 into the atmosphere, how much power does it tafe to mine the metals and manufacture the glass and electrics. how much power does it take to get these goods to our doorstep. Valuable resources that we should be leaving for our childrens future are being wasted, and perfectly good machines need to be taken to landfill which in itself is a scarce resource.
You can go on and on, how do you mine these metals, how do you get things to the dump......build more roads....more wasted resources, more pollution.
Those that will benefit most out of any of these schemes... big business.

Is Mandelson part of some government scrappage scheme? Exchange your old disgraced Cabinet Minister for a Lordship?

    What will be next?

furniture, power tools, TVs, kitchen units, carpets.................?

Wives and girlfriends. Mine is coming up for 8 years now, still in full working order of course but not as nice as one of these new-fangled 19-year olds that you get on the market these days.

I haven't got the inclination to scrap the current one or spend money, time and effort wining and dining a new version model. But if the government gave the option to trade mine in for a cash lump sum, I might consider it.*

I imagine Pastures as a Betamax type of lady. Try sending her a PM.
  • I need a scrappage scheme for my socks & there is a couple of bedside cabinets I could do with dumping.
