Another terrible idea. Does nobody remember the 1970s and what happens when you mess with markets?

As so many white goods are quite cheap now wouldn't it end up costing the firms in terms of collecting the old goods? It's not like with cars where you can turn up at the shop with your old washer in the back of the car is it?

More bo11ox, I replace things when they need replacing, ie go bang kaput or just die a death. Still got our 1st microwave about 20 years old, in that time my mother has had about 4 I think.
PS does anyone know where I can get some betamax video tapes??
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

It's just another scheme that enables those who could afford it to part with their money, while those with wrecks have to struggle on. It's a shame any scrapped items couldn't then be swapped out for older units the real poor had.

Scrappage schemes remove the middle layer from the maretplace, meaning a shortage of items for people without money. Normally there's a trickle down, with people just starting out or a bit short being donated old stuff from friends/family when they buy new.

I don't do predictions often, but here goes.

It will never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never happen in this recession.

It's just another "spare a thought for us" idea.
I don't think any one in their right mind thinks this will happen (that means 90% of posters on here think it will:))

My microwave is of indeterminate age, I got it second hand off a neighbour 12 years ago and I don't think she got it new either!

Tumble dryer (with broken door which is held shut with a paint tin) is 11 years old.

Washing machine is a relatively new 6 years old as is the fridge freezer.

As with the scrappage thing for cars, it will only really help those who can afford to replace anyway...won't do a scoobie for me.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

There is a firm here in Liverpool, Bulky Bobs. I think they are some sort of charity, they collect bulky household items, mostly white goods, they are then refurbished and sold on with perhaps a 12mth guarantee to people who can't afford to buy new.
The people who do the refurbishment are unemployed and are receiving training in washing machine; fridge; television whatever, so it helps in two ways, firstly selling cheaper goods that are guaranteed and also teaching people a trade.
Does this scheme run in other parts of the country ?
Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

This is a much more sensible and moneysaving solution. It provides local employment for collection and repair as well as saving people money. Am I wrong in thinking many white goods are made far away and hence this suggested scheme, although providing retail employment, does little for UK manufacturing.

Similar thing here with cycles I think, adults with learning difficulties doing them (supervised)
