Scrapage scheme for white goods?

The British Retail Consortium is pushing the government to introduce a scrappage scheme for white goods over 10 years old.
The move, they say would revitalise the high street, and get people using energy efficient goods, such as washing machines, fridges, freezers.
They also say that VAT should be removed from energy efficient appliances.
Would anyone support this? Looks like retail, which saw a steep fall last month is just trying to get on the bandwagon to me.

Maybe we could have a scrapage scheme for new build slums where all the extortionately priced, cheap and nasty new builds thrown up in the last 10 years simply to fleece the gullible and make them think they are professional property investors/slumlords are knocked down and replaced with adequately sized family homes. :rolleyes:0

Considering I'm in one of those rabbit hutches, I'd think that was a brilliant idea

Like the car scheme it would bring purchases that were "in mind" forward possibly creating a lull further down the line.
I may bring forward the purchase of a new freezer from the planned purchase in the xmas-jan period (sales & before the VAT goes back up)
Unless the freezer croaks it before then.I beep for Robins - Beep Beep
& Choo Choo for trains!!0 -
I'd buy a freezer with it, need one really, just have been waiting till the current one dies.
So I'd probably use the scheme if they gave me a grand to buy one

In some ways it's good, but like everything else it has to be paid for somehow, we can't keep giving money away.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0

Probably a scrappage scheme for old consoles or those with a standard CRT TV

Especially for those in poverty, as thats just not fair.0 -

Houses next , and holiday homes?
But seriously the op has a spot on idea , cant beleive it hasnt been thought of and implemented. However can this be run to benefit more than tesco/asda and the likes of dsg etc?
By this I mean actually do we still make white goods in the uk?This would help manufacturing , and as we all know the more you make the price comes down then exports become more viable.
Maybe the solution is to say tax imports higher than goods made here at point of sale.Thing is goods in the eu are usually 3 years warranty , here its only one and your robbed on insurance for the other two by the high st retailer....its the same goods made in the same factories.Perhaps making the supermarket give 5 years on white goods and three on the high street would help out the high street that little bit more.Have you tried turning it off and on again?0
