OS Daily Thread - Sunday 16th August

Hi there! This is the Daily Thread for Sunday 16th August! It is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
Please do not start a new Daily Thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Dailys' live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good.
Morning OS lovelies
esmf73 and here is an extra
for you as you need one hon.
Bitsy - ifyou haven't already bought lock n lock from lakeland then Morrisons do their own version Klik n lock which are virtually as good or you can buy sets on QVC.
Redruby - They were delicious thank you!! And wow weren't you busy making all those salads!
Mioliere - I read your response out to Ian and he was already packing his suitcase.. :rotfl::rotfl:. I get the feeling if I am ever able to travel that far we may well take you up on that offer.
Taplady - I hope you enjoy your three days off hon!
Haribo - I think the amount of sunshine we have had recently might have helped the peppers as I have at last count 15 green ones - only picked three so far as the others are still small. Only two chillis though several flowers, but they really were way behind everything else.
Patchwork - I have read the Economy Gastronomy thread and even posted and while I agree with you, spending that much money is totally mind blowing, I still think that any programme like that that shows how people can cut down on their grocery bills and start to cook from scratch is better than none at all. Am just hoping they might get some families on smaller budgets than going for the 'shock' techniques of the truly wasteful families we have seen so far.
celyn - honey fungus??
And maybe you could suggest a sponge cake to cut down costs?
Another hot day yesterday which was lovely though it meant the garden needed extra watering as we missed doing it on Friday. Picked a few more strawberries.
Didn't cook cos we were too tired
- my OH from working and me from getting up so early to talk to Tris. I will go back to mid mid morning today and have a snoozle! We had pasties from the freezer instead, but today I AM going to make my sausage meat plait, as long as the sun isn't shining as the garden always comes first!
I had a different home help last week and when she changed the bedding I specifically asked her to leave my only two silk pillowcases on the side so I could hand wash them. Anyway, she left two cotton pillowcases on the side and threw my silk ones into the washing machine and then the tumble dryer and they are completely ruined now. Despite washing them again they still feel like cardboard. I am a tad annoyed as they were £20 a year ago which I can't really qualify spending again. Anyway, sorry about that - gripe over now!
I hope you all have a peaceful Sunday - Warm gentle
to anyone who needs one today.

To be frugal, you need to spend money wisely, simply spending less is not enough.

Morning.
A more tranquil day today. What with birthdays, parties and steam rallys, today I am planning nothing.
No doubt everyone will get bored, but I would quite like a day of nothing. Perhaps a nice meal at the end under the new gazebo (a word I could not remember yesterday).
Newspaper this morning, then church, then nothing.....
Steam rally was pretty good. I could not get everyone to leave in the end.... It was cool and misty, but passable.
Have a nice dayNO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0 -
Morning All
Had a lovely meal out last night, had Prawns and Mushrooms done in Sambuca Cream Sauce, Fillet steak, filled with Gorgonzola and wraped in Panchetta, with a rich red wine sauce, served with veg, and chocolate Tiramasu (sp) together with a bottle of red wine, then returned home for some more wine so DH could have some as he drove, then Match of the Day was on, so DH & I retired and left DS to the TV. I have found red wine and power surges seem to be linked, so by 5.30 I was awake and on here.
Smoky - steady on girl you are only human you know, yes it is surprising what you find when you do a clear out! I am also still worried about Sunnygirl someone did look at her Facebook page to see if she was on there, maybe they will be kind enough to look again.
Pen-Pin - thanks for the kind age;), trouble is DH would be had up for cradle snatching as he is 60 on the 27th:eek::eek::D. Hope you are recovered a little today. I have to make and ice a sponge and fruit cake for then, unless I fall back on the shops:o.
:hello: Welcome esmf73 and have a ((hug)) from me too.
Rabbit pie, mash and veg for lunch today (we normally eat our cooked meal later), so DS can then go and watch football at a friend who has Sky Sport before he goes back home.

Morning everyone.
Just going to put my chicken in to roast in a mo so I can pick it tp pieces later.
Got to put a few bits into the loft for storage, get the case down and start packing for our hols. We were going for a week but H has got to work so we are only away for 5 days but it's better than nothing. Hope the weather is on our side as I would love to get the kids onto the beach again.
My tomatoes are just not ripening. I have loads of green ones and I've had a single solitary red one. Shan't be purcahsing this variety again as i have been very disappointed. Going to end up chucking the plant I fear at this rate. Found loads of eggs from cabbage white butterfly. I think they are slowly winning the war (although I've had some lovely produce from my caulis - my broccoli side shoots keep going leggy and then flowering grrrrr). For next year I will contruct a frame to go over the plot with finer mesh tacked to it. My netting isn't small enough to stop them squeezing through. Still only my first year. If I was successful at everything first time round I've never learn anything
Diva - I've already bought some Lock n Lock although they were large 4 ltr ones, just perfect for my flour. My local Morrisons doesn't tend to have a great deal of stock alot of the time so I am happy with my purchase. I might have a nose for some smaller tupperware items as when I need them.
Evil weevils even spread to a cupboard with my medicines in grrrr. They were in a lot of the cardboard boxes with calpol in them etc. Needless to say that ended up being sprayed down along with the one with my herbs and oils and sauces. The whole saga has been a right pain in the rear end
borrowed Delias Frugal Food from library and another cookbook (name escapes me) to have nose through for some inspiration for meal plans. Only downside is having to take them back to local town which means paying for parking.......but my local library is much smaller and they never seem to have anything worthwhile in.
Haven't caught up with yesterdays thread so off for a nose.
Sisercas - No idea where the weevils came from. They like humid conditions and with it being muggy and wet here I suspect they were lurking in the flour I bought and have decided to get busy
donny-gal - belated Happy BirthdayI have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knifeLouise Brooks

Morning everyone!
Had a busy day yesterday, eldest son's friend had a bithday party in the local forestry centre in the morning (they did a treasure hunt around the lake looking for clues based around a wildlife theme, made a nice change from the usual bouncy castle!) then in the afternoon in was the village horticultural show.
Last night I made 4lb of tomato chutney, so am enjoying looking at them lined up in the kitchen. I think I am going to make Spiced Plum Chutney next, I bought some whilst on holiday last year in Devon and it was delicious, but it cost around £3 for a 1/2 lb jar so I'm sure I can make similar for much less!
Have finished the second sleeve of my daughter's cardigan, so only the button band and making up to do now... then I can start on teh fab Jean Greenhowe pattern I have bought to make toys for the three of them for Christmas!
My copy of the Economy Gastronomy book came in the post yesterday. It is a good book, but it doesn't tell me that much that I don't already know. Plus I'm not sure that I would count lime leaves in my freezer as a basic food... It is nice to have some new ideas for recipes though as I do tend to get stuck in a rut of cooking the same things week in week out. Am definitely going to try the Bakewell Tart and Beef Pasties.
Lunch today at my inlaws so I don't need to cook. My mother in law is proper OS. Dinner will be a joint of beef from the local butcher (which she will eke out for the next 3 days), veggies from the garden, and then a steamed sponge pudding topped with homemade strawberry jam. Yum!
Hope you all have a good day x
PS Bitsy Beans: can't you ask your local library to order books in for you? I know you can in mine, they can either get them from a neighbouring library, or if you pay 50p they will buy a copy of anything you want!0 -
Morning

Good morning
Well, had a good day yesterday. Went for a walk and found a tree along a lane with lots of miniature plums on it (bagged quite a few:D) then picked over five pounds of blackberries, made 2 litres of smoothie with fruit just passed its best, had homegrown beans and courgettes with dinner and managed to paint half the hall.
Finished the evening sitting in the garden with a glass of wine.
Today will be spent getting ready for another week of work & also hope to finish most of the painting.
Dizzybuff - welcome:wave:
Have a lovely Sunday everyone, (((hugs))) to those in need.

Morning All
Well its another beautiful day in Essex - very warm out there already.
Plans are - load wm, jump in shower then do some ironing before it gets too hot.
Have a pork spare rib joint to roast but if its too hot later may change the menu plan. Hope to spend a little time this afternoon reading in the garden.
DS is enjoying his caravan trip and it has been rather quiet here without him.
Hope you all have lovely relaxing Sundays.
x
Oh nearly forgot - hello & welcome Dizzybuff0 -
Good morning,
Could all of the early risers please pm me your addresses so that I can post you a small child. He was up at 5:10am this morning. You can take turns to have him until he starts school in September. I am hoping that school will take some of the bounce out of him :rotfl: He ate a dinner that I would have struggled with last night, yet he is small and skinny, and was awake early saying he was hungry!
I decluttered the bookcase in his playroom yesterday. It took me a while, but it now looks like a bookcase again. Hopefully he won't miss some of the [STRIKE]junk[/STRIKE] artwork that I have thrown out. I want to get out for some fresh air today, but it looks a bit gloomy outside. Fingers crossed for a bit of sun.
Take care all of you0 -
