We had loads of peas, but the kids ate most of them fresh from the pod. DD2 was so cute, only 1 and she was eating them like sweets lol. They also enjoyed the baby broad beans mmmm.

Caught the kids eating baby carrots out of the garden as well. They used the hose to wash them and munched away lol.

Think I may try some outside as so far we seem to have quite a sheltered garden so hopefully frost will be late (maybe we will get an indian summer?), but be prepared to cover at night if required.
Already have some carrots in pots that can go in the GH later on so think I will do some peas as well.

Do I get a prize for the worst peas this year? I had all of 2 (yes, 2!!!!) pods of peas. they were not dwarf variety, supposed to grow for up to 1.5m, but all I got was less than 2 feet.

The same with beans - although these grew tall, so far I had 1 bean (yes, ONE bean). Well, these started side shoots a couple of weeks ago, and more flowers, so maybe I will get a couple more...

To be honest, the weather was so horrible, that nothing has grown much here...

We didn't get any pea moth activity, but I am wondering if this is because the peas were dwarf plants or because I shoved some onions in between the rows of peas hmmm

maybe but time of year is an issue, early crops don't normally need protection.

I use scaffold netting. It's really cheap, comes in green and works. I got a roll of 3m x 50m for £16.50 cost I think to joe public it's still on just over £30. Better still befriend a builder;)
    Kind Regards

OK so my "Beefsteak tomatoes" turned out to be about 2cm across and bright yellow this year....I think companies do sometimes get the breeding or the packaging wrong!

Had our best year ever for peas and still picking from succession planting in the buckets used for early potatoes. Didnt freeze any but had several meals from them and we were constantly snacking :) No sign of pea moth damage either.

The main changes this year were:
    1. Germinating indoors in 4 foot long guttering which fits neatly on window sills. This stopped the usual mouse attacks
    2. Growing in beds with lots of new compost from heap (some only partially rotted)
    3. Changing variety from Kelvedon Wonder to Early Onward
Against that, my carrots have fanged, my tom harvest was decimated by botrytis and my broccoli outgrew the netting and is now covered with cabbage whites and their caterpillars :(
  • I know what I am going to grow now next year. Carrots, potatoes, spring onions, runner beans. Nothing else has been very successful. But all of those have produced a good harvest. I was especially pleased with the large sturdy carrots and have just picked some more today. I have planted Rocket 3 times and nothing, not a sausage. The onions dissapeared. I am holding my breath that this sunshine might ripen the tomatoes. Oh and the peas were a bit rubbish. Well the pea pods were nice, but I have only had enough to put the peas in with the salad. Not enough for dinner, and now most of them have died. All fruit did well though.

Onions; sow in modules, plant out in the module bunches and when you can visibly see them bulbing up - then plant them individually. loosen the soil round them every now and then if it starts hardening up.
