Peas what did we do wrong

Me and o.h planted some peas in a tub at the beginning of May. To cut a long story short The peas only grew about 2ft up the canes although we got enough peas for two meals it was very poor.We think where we went wrong is that we should have sowed them directly into the ground and not in a tub. Any advice would be welcome for next years crop, Thanks

Depends really what the weather was like in your part of the country, if it was cold and wet through May and June, the bees etc would not have been around to polinate, hence poor crop, or it was rather dry then you were probably not watering enough, especially in a tub. They will do better in open ground, but a tub will work.
You should also plant some flowers to help attract bees nearby. Don't give up and remember to sow every two weeks for a long cropping period. My Mind wanders, if found please return.0 -
also depends what sort of peas! Dwarf peas might well only grow that high. And one plant won't give a huge batch. You need a few, sown sucessively, to give a crop over a period of time xxGood Enough Club member number 27(2) AND I got me a stalkee!

Thanks Guys Jnelhams. I think that might be it the watering bit that is. The weather we have had here has been been warm and of little rain and to be honest i have been guilty of underwatering them. So more watering if the same conditions next year.
Morty 007 They were not Dwarf peas. I'v just asked o.h and the boss [the misses] planted about 6 plants in a tub. They just did not grow.
Thanks for the info to you both0 -
sounds like dwarf peas which only grwo about 2ft. A tub of plants won't give you much more than two meals worth.
Yesturday I sowed 864 dwarf pea seed (bed size 12ft x 2ft) allowing for losses of about 150 plants will give me a crop of about 14,000 peas which will provide us peas for about 35+ meals.
When selecting for your next crop remember that you could sow a climbing pea but then it could be attacked by the pea moth which destroyed my large crop earlier this year. Dwarf peas can be covered.Kind Regards

Next year, I'm going to net my peas as I lost loads to the dreaded moth.......
You can't ask what you did wrong without telling us what you did!!!
My method is to sow into toilet roll innerds and then plant out in the spring - dwarfs are put into caned areas with twine to keep them all in as they use each other to hold themselves up. Tall peas get grown up a frame.
Peas in pots are better utilised by picking the pea tips several times and [what I do is] put them into rice dishes chopped like a herb so that you get the flavour without the actual pea. I keep one of these on the go most of the year round.0 -

Are these under cover Maz or have I time to bang some more peas in now?

Hi there:hello:
yes they are under cover but you could easily cover a bed and get the same results outside. If I'm honest the polytunnel is far to hot for peas but I have to try.Kind Regards

Yes, during winter but at the moment they are in a wide clay pot outside the back door. I might keep some in the greenhouse this winter as it's my first winter with a greenhouse and I want to see what I can keep in it all year round.
Put pea seeds shoulder to shoulder and cover with an inch of soil and keep moist. They take 2-3 trimmings so if you like it and want them on the go again sow another pot once the first one is an inch high.
Last spring, I left my pea pots to keep growing after the first few trimmings and chucked them in the garden and they became my first pea harvests...,I put 4 canes round them to keep them from falling all over the place.
I generally buy sprouting seeds for pea seeds for this rather than named peas.......it's a whole lot cheaper.0 -
My peas went like a bomb last year and have bombed this year

I'm freezing my crop as they ripen this year and I think I might have enough for one dinner by the end of the season!0
