RBS Change in Charging Policy !!!

RBS have changed their charging policy ... They now give you notice 21 days in advance on when they will debit any bank charges ...

I called RBS direct banking and asked what my available balance was in my Royalties Gold account and transferred most of that into my Instant Access Savings Account which I use to access my money ...

They failed to inform me that they would be taking over £90 in charges at midnight that night which took me over my overdraught limit ... And funnily enough, I hadn't remembered the date they would be taking it ...

While they can see what direct debits and uncleared cheques are pending on your account , it would appear they cannot see what charges THEY are planning to take ...

I will now be charged a standard fee of £28 for going over my limit ...

How can I best approach this with my branch ...

  • They sent out a change to the terms of the accounts in January this year phasing it in, in April and June.
    The referral fees would have been preadvised so check you last statement.

    But when I called them and asked how much money was available to me in that account they failed to tell me about the charges ( I would have left the money there if I had known ! ) ... They would have been able to tell me if there were DD's or cheques still to come off ... Why can they not see their own charges that are scheduled to come off ? All the transactions were dated the 13th Aug ...

    I've just been stung by RBS's new charges too. My total income for the week was £108.14 - bank charges £133. Great....

    I wasn't advised of charges last month so they took £58. I wasn't expecting this so went £157.41 overdrawn for 2 days (I have a £100 limit). That error lead to the £133 this month.

    I would cry but think the best thing is to just close the account and use my Co-op account only. I agree I should pay charges on the first error but it so easily spirals out of control. £133 for a 2 day error is amazing....

    The banks could quite easily be more transparent about their charges. Most of us use online banking so why don't forthcoming charges show up on there. At least that would give people a sporting chance to get covering funds available. They make one small error spiral out of control with their current practice.....

    If you have paperless statements they would. Look, the charges used to go out straight away so people complained they aren't pre advised. Now they are preadvised you still aren't happy.
    For the avoidance of doubt RBS/NatWest give 21 days notice from the statement date until the charges go out of the account.

    You asked them for your available balance and they told you even though the charges had not come out yet so they did tell you what the balance was. Check the pre advice statements.

    My personal thoughts are that they should give at least 5 weeks notice, as a lot of people are paid monthly. This would at least solve the problem I frequently get where I have bank charges taken out the day before I get paid and cause me to incur more charges.

    (*Unless it's Santander. The branch says they sent you an umbrella 3 times already and don't understand why you don't have it yet and want it back right now!!!)

    Or change the statement date which will take effect 2 months afterwards ;)
