I,ve been cutting my own for about 20 years, I have had a set of cordless ones now for the last 4 years, they are ceramic blade ones so no need to oil them and they will stay sharp forever, don't worry about the power loss if they start to get a bit slow just plug the lead in. Think i paid £20 from argos, takes me 15 minutes from starting to being showered and dressed, why would anyone go to the hairdressers? I haven't been since i was about 10 years old think of the money i've saved!
  • Wahl's the way to go - iv'e had mine for 10 years, and haven't paid for a hair cut for 10 yrs either!

I normally have my hair cut with grade 2 at the sides and grade 5 on top.

How easy would it be to do this myself with clippers?
Would I need to resort to just having grade 5 all over?

I would have it shorter (grade 4 all over), but she who must be obeyed doesn't like that!

Are these ones good? And at those prices?

I want to cut my own hair as well. I've always had a sense of dread going to the barbers ... maybe a trust issue because of some stranger coming towards me with scissors and razors going all over my head. You know that automatic spine-shrinking feeling you get when something like a fly buzzes too near your ear? That's how I feel. Plus the fact that my ear was cut during one visit when I was younger.

Plus it's going to save some pennies as well. £9 last time I went!

Had any disasters yet OP and self hair-cutters? My hairstyle is quite simple, but I don't want to end up looking ridiculous. That's been the main reason why I haven't started earlier. But at £9 a pop, I've decided to reconsider.

Equinox, my husband has the ones in the first link and they are very good. That is a very good price too, they are around £40 even on ebay. He cuts his hair without bothering about using a mirror and it comes out very neat and professional looking.

I got a set of these a few weeks back...

...and have been very pleased with them.

I don't bother with the plastic guards and cut my hair very short. They are quiet and powerful and get the job done very quickly. Previously I had a set of Nicky Clarke clippers that were fine, but after a few years of weekly cuts they finally gave up on me.

    Great money saving tool

I use a Nicky Clarke that I bought off one of the TV channels! It was only £20, but it's really good for pretty much everything! Comes with scissors, etc

I have a Philips QC5055 and also a Wahl Homecut which I don't use any more but is still working. The philips did get some criticism from some people saying the comb moved but I haven't had that problem. I suspect that some people treat it like they are wrestling with an Alligator and push too hard. The battery is not good but I don't use it, I always use it corded.

I don't have my hair short, more traditionally parted on the top left and trailing across and I find the very long cutting useful on this trimmer which is the main reason that I purchased it. I can get a very good and neat cut, better than any barber that I used years ago when I went. Very quickly pays for itself.

The "box" is a bit of a joke, Philips trying to make it out to be quality when it's just a darkly coloured polystyrene box.

I didn't purchase from Amazon, I got it from planetgizmo in Jan 2009 discounted to £21.25. Hey I love discounts :T They don't sell them now.

The hardest part is cutting the back line straight and not having one side longer than the other.

A guy at work had one of those round rotating clippers by Babyliss, supposedly designed to allow you to do your own hair

He looked like a flea-bitten dog with large chunks of his hair actually pulled out in patches by this contraption

I'll endorse the Wahl clippers from Argos as well. They are the business. At £20, they've paid for themselves many times over.
