Green Waste Collection - How Much?

I have been toying with the idea of signing up to my local council's garden waste collection service. I do compost at home but still have to go the dump with the hedge clippings etc. Instead of me using my car it seems more sensible to make use of the collection service (also means I don't have to clean the car so often!!!!).

Had a look on the council website for prices and couldn't believe how much it costs. :eek:It is £79 in the first year and £67 for subsequent years:eek:. This is for a fortnighlty collection service for the whole year.

Am I being tight and unrealistic or does this seem to be a bit pricey?

Our is free. You get a green (fancy that!) wheelie bin collected fortnightly except for a six week or so period around Christmas time.

We have brown bins that take all garden waste and uncooked veg peels. We have 2 large brown wheelies as the front lawn is big and we needed the space.
Mind you don't need as much room now we have the compost bins up and running and the back lawn has been changed over to raised beds.
The collection is free every fortnight.

My council ( Greenwich) makes no extra charge. All food ( cooked and uncooked) waste and garden waste in one bin which is collected weekly. They also collect recyclables ( glass, plastic, paper, cardboard, cans ) in a mixed bin weekly and landfill ( a third bin, or if like us one small carrier bag) weekly. Suppose they're not so bad really :D

My council is Highland. Our green (landfill) bins are collected weekly, our brown (garden waste only!) are fortnightly and our blue boxes (cans and paper only) are on the alternate fortnights! It is free but if you live in a rural area they give you a blue wheelie bin that takes a lot more than just paper and cans! Although you can put shredded paper in a tied plastic bag and they will take that. Anything else like cardboard and plastic have to be taken to the recycling centre, and we have a glass collection point at the local shop.

Can't wait for our big tesco to bring in the recycling bins where you get points for taking in paper and plastics and the like. I'll be using that more than anything else!!!

Ours is free too. They've not yet rolled out the green waste bins across the city, but in the meantime, we can pick up big strong sacks at the library and other places) for free and you just ring the number given when you're ready for them to collect.

Can I ask why you don't compost your clippings too?

East Lothian. Brown wheelie bin with free uplift once every two weeks, alternating with the paper/glass/cans collection.

I only tend to use it for prunings, because I've four compost bins to feed. (Allotment...) I can also take stuff to the local dump for free.
