oh, and the SNRM of 6dB on a 35dB attenuation line is pretty near perfect, so that won't be causing it..

This is incorrect. 6db is at the lowest value that the router will synchronise at. OPs sync speed should be higher with an attenuation of 35db, the line should be capable of over 8Mbps.
    Try what I posted earlier.

ikkle ~ we have NO idea if changing the firmware WILL make any difference
Plug it into the master socket as someone else suggested (Just to see if it is the internal wiring)

Then id do as my suggestion above

Personally speaking until you get a good signal id suggest AGAINST a firmware update as if it ANY point the link breaks you could end up with a dead router so thats the LAST thing id try

First, let me say that I am no expert and even little techno-phobic but I have experienced the same and with talktalk so thought I would throw my hat into the ring with what happened with me.

I had precisely the same - the internet became super-super slow; I was conned into thinking it would work but if I tried to go "further into" a site, it would go so so slow and then that bleeping failed connection page would come up. Driving me bonkers it was (and I am usually very patient because I am still very happy to have the internet at all, simple sould that I am).

I am wireless and in a different room from the router and use a Dell Inspiron fwiw.

I called the Technical helpline a little warily as their firstline support is usually not-native-English speaking (which never helps, I'm afraid to say - for starters, they don't even understand my [perfectly English/American] name; in my experience, secondline support is much better.

Anyhoo - great chap called Joseph; I explained what was happening - in my usual dumb blonde way. He hummed and hahhed a little bit and did some kind of remote thingymajig and then said "ah-HA" and put me on hold. Then he came back and I bombarded him with "Why would it suddenly start?"-type questions. His answer was "Dunno" and he put me on hold again and then said, "It will be much better now". Oh. So I did ask for a bit of an explanation and he said that I am at the furthest distance from the exchange (knew that) but for some reason my profile was set as though as I was very close to it. ???? He had done whatever needed to be done to correct (although still couldn't say why it had suddenly happened/started to misbehave [been with the since Feb]) and it is back to super-self - remembering though that I am very easy to please. Maybe you could try their tech support?

Gold star to talktalk I say (and my bill is finally lower than with BT thanks to good package).

Ok so I plugged it into the master socket (or more my brother did) and the speed was almost the same, I managed to work out how to upgrade the firmware V4.01.04 to V4.01.40 and the router was originally on channel 10, do I still need to change the channel? Current d/l speed 6560 kbps ul speed 805 kbps.

Plug the router into the test socket and post your router statistics

    Log in at http://192.168.0.1/start.htm
Not sure what your login is probably user admin password admin

Scroll down to where it says show router stats.

Yes, if its still slow try changing the channel but do one thing at a time so when its fixed you know what the problem was.

I'd change the channel first before doing the firmware.

We should not need to play with the telephone line because the OP can connect to it fine using a cable.

On the assumption your MacBook is now up to date and you are still experiencing dropouts, try this:
    1. Download KisMAC. Install and run.
    2. Open preferences, click on driver. There will be an empty box called "Capture Devices". Below that, there will be a dropdown menu. Select the one that says "Apple Airport, Active Mode" or something similar to that. Close preferences when done.
    3. Click on start scan on the bottom right of the KisMAC window. A list of wireless devices will now be displayed including your own. The important thing here is to look at the "Ch" column to see what channels the devices are using.

If your device is using the same channel as another device, then this will almost certainly be the cause of the dropouts.
If your channel is close to another devices' channel (e.g. Yours is 3 and the neighbours is 4), then this could cause problems too if your signal strength is low. Signal strength is shown by the column "Signal", the higher the better. If your signal strength is lower than theirs in this case, then this could be a cause of the dropouts.
If you find there are about 40 different devices listed in the window, move house :)

To correct the problem, set your channel to one that is free. e.g if your neighbours have taken channels 1, 5, 6, 9 and 13, then you may want to choose channel 3 to use. I'm not familiar with the DG834G, so you will have to rely on your instruction manual or others members of the forum to help you there.

If that doesn't work, a firmware update may be what you need (select your device, click on downloads on the resulting page, follow instructions for installation). The other alternative is that the wireless part of your Netgear is starting to fail.
