Ok I'm officialy going to scream! I'm now on wireless and whilst the pages are taking a while to load broadband speed tester says im getting dl 6680 kbps ul 838 kbps which makes me think its the signal that keeps dropping.

Someone mentioned a noise thing on the router - not overly with the terms sorry - and I did the statistics test which means naff all to me but might to you and got the following:

Line Attenuation Dl 35 db Ul 9.5 db
Noise Margin Dl 6db Ul 7db

    1. What model is your Macbook?

    2. Have you got the latest updates installed? (Apple menu in top left, Software Update... )

    3. There was a recent specific update by apple. If your machine is one of those affected, installing it may help.

If those do not help, changing a few settings on your Netgear may help. Will get to that stage when we need to.

(My Linksys was always flaky with my laptop. Change some settings, it worked fine afterward. One thing I've noticed is Macs adhere to standards almost to the letter. So when companies try to do fancy things to enhance range, as an example, they don't conform strictly to those standards and the Mac just goes /facepalm. Not sure which side of the fence I stand on this one: stick to standards or allow more freedom to enhance tech)

    1- Macbook Model 4,1 13inch White
2- Had just upgraded to OS X 10.5.8 the other day - obviously the new airport update wasn't showing before then as I didn't have the necessary OS X, so far the internet seems to be working instantly, but at a later time it might dip out again so will keep an eye out.

Thank you though for the help so far xx

Upgrade the firmware of the router, making sure you save/backup the settings first on the Netgear, then retry

Before you take drastic action, could you check your router stats whilst plugged into your Master sockets test connector.

Any speed increase would indicate a problem with your extension wiring which needs addressing.
ATM your download noise margin (6db) is on the limit and may be casing drop outs in the evening.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

ikkle hun, can you give the exact model of the netgear router ?? then we can advise on login details if you've lost them. Once inside your router, you should be able to fix the wireless channel to ch 11, and try it then. far less drastic than a firmware upgrade ;)

oh, and the SNRM of 6dB on a 35dB attenuation line is pretty near perfect, so that won't be causing it..

Personally id press the reset button on the router for 30 seconds to boot it into default settings (With it switched on). Power everything down then boot everything up in order
Go into the router setup screen and switch on WPA and make a NEW passkey

    or
    http://192.168.0.1
    or
    http://192.168.0.227
Then leave it for a couple of weeks to let it settle. If its still bad then id suggest a new router (Try upgrading the firmware first of course)

I think what you are seeing is a conflict on the Wi-Fi channel you are using. This could be from a device such as a baby monitor or cordless phone so you wont necessarily detect it by searching for other networks on your computer.

Go into the router setup page and try changing the wireless channel you are using - pick one well away from the one you are currently on and make sure no other networks nearby are using the same channel. Channels 1 and 6 are popular so stay away from these, i'd recommend trying 13.
