Tiscali: having me on

I've been with Tiscali for a good few years now and am currently on a 512kbps with phone package for £17.99. I've been recently wanting to up my speed to 2mbps. Not a problem you think? Tiscali's website will not let me upgrade my speed, as it says that the phoneline is unable to take more speed. OK then, I'll accept that but decide to check with BT, who test the line, and offer me 8mbps. Back to Tiscali's tech help line who says, as before, "the line cannot take more speed". This has been going on for the last few weeks and after never recieving the promised calls explaining the reason for this, I decided to have a full on assault with them today. After being bounced around call centres, the final outcome (so far) is for me to cancel my account and open a new one at the higher speed.
I've managed to get a phone number not published on the net and will have a go at them over the next few days.
I'll report back if there is interest.
Sorry about the moan but they have wound me up today and needed to get it of my chest.

Tiscali, are by far a waste of time.. I sacked them last year after my contract ran out.. Was fed up of calling India, at national rate to get totally the wrong answer to my question......0

Trouble is, the package is'nt that bad and I don't want the trouble of changing my email address0

Hi
Even if you leave Tiscali, you can still keep your email address, I have and I left them last year, when they started issuing MAC.
Hope this helps0 -
petethepet,
Although the BT site says that you 'can get 8 meg BB' this just means that the exchange is enabled to give you 8 meg.
By the sounds of it, Tiscali are telling you that the line is not able to take more than 512. this might actually be the case. If they do upgrade your line to say 2 meg, the chances are if you are more than (if memory is correct) 1.5 km from exchange you would have either intermittant connection i.e. lose connection @ peak times or no connection at all.
BELIEVE me with this one, I worked for BT BB Tech desk for 6 months, if the speed is upgraded it normally takes 10-20 working days for BT openreach to put right!!!

These speed testers are notoriously unreliable. I checked mine out and it said that I could only get 512 for certain and 1 meg maybe, my next door neighbour neighbours number came up as green for 2 meg.. I am currently getting between 3.5 and 5meg and the line/connection is as stable as ever.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

regarding your email. Thanks to this site, I took the plunge and went for a googlemail email address.
Yes it is a bit inconvenient to have to let everyone know your new email address but you only need to do it once and for all and can happily change ISP's in the future without worrying about your email address. I really like googlemail's interface too and it can be downloaded for free into Outlook.
It is by invite only so PM me if you want to take the plunge.0 -
I rang Tiscali on a number of occasions, pretending to be a new customer (i have more than one phone line) and they assured me every time that the line WAS able to take speeds up to and above 8mbps.
As for the email thing, I have my address on stationary and it would be VERY expensive to change.
It's nearly eight in the morning, I'm just about to ring them. I'll report back later0 -
Noone should tie themselves up to an ISP email address just in case you switch and then they do turn it off. Bag a £1.99 a year domain eg https://www.petethepet.com, which will give you the ability to do pete@petethepet.com, petesmissus@petethepet.com etc, and then forward mail to your current ISP whichever that is. Remember to spoof your outgoing email addy in Outlook. Do this before you switch ISPs so you get a while of parallel running.illegitimi non carborundum0

Froggitt. Thats fantastic. The way I'm going to go I think.
On the Tiscali front, I had it out with head office, outcome is: Cancel my account with them and start a new one at 2mbps. Seems strange but there you go0 -
i'd try and see if there's a better deal for a 2meg connection out there before commiting to tiscali for another year-especially since you've witnessed first hand how poor their customer services is....The word is BOUGHT, not BROUGHT.
It's LOSE, NOT LOOSE.
