Second that eagle, its not her English she needs to work on, after all most call centre staff are in Bombay anyway. BTW not being racist just stating a fact.
Is the OP a wind-up or has paranoia and conspiracy theories permeated every aspect of our society?

FD are a phone bank (ok so they have a web bank too), and you say your wife can't speak English so, out of curiosity how did she apply?

If there is a question on the application whether you can speak English or not surely there will be a lot of rejections in this country.

Controversial. But also quite true, especially in Essex. And thats just the locals!

Surely she couldn't have filled in the application if she doesn't speak English...

    Thanks for all inputs.

My wife recently applied for Barclaycard Platinuim and she has received it with a credit limit of £4500. She is on electoral.

First Dirrect phoned us at home and tried to speak to my wife. I told them that she cannot speak english. They hanged up and the next day we received rejection letter.

That's why I said First Direct declined her because she cannot speak English. In the letter they just said she did not meet the criteria.

Many companies won't deal with customers who can't speak English - Provident Financial and Grattan being two examples. The reasons are manifold and justified.
    For example -

If the applicant can't speak English, they can't understand the Terms & Conditions, which may lead to any contract being invalidated.
If the applicant can't speak English, the company cannot communicate effectively with the individual. Under the Data Protection Act, the bank is unable to communicate via anyone else without the account holder's permission, which they're unable to give if they don't speak English.

    Sorry mate

No its not - its because the companies are racist, like the original poster implied!
