Hi there! This is the Daily Thread for Fri 14th Aug! It is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
Please do not start a new Daily Thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Dailys' live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good.

Morning.

Managed to make a turtle cake, not too bad for an amatuer.

Bugs in flour eh? Used to find them all the time in Africa. Just sifted them out with a fine sifter I got from the market. I mean once you bake the bread they die anyway. I hated tiny sugar ants that floated to the surface of the milk in the cereal bowl.

Cloudy day, but yesterday was warm and sunny, so managed to cut the grass, check the bees and stuff, so not too bad.
There is actually some honey, which was rather surprising considering the large amount of rain and nasty weather days. Might get about 100lbs by the end of Aug, fingers crossed.

Big BBQ today, I decided to do the office summer BBQ, so I have about 20 coming round later. It will cost me, but I managed to shop wisely and make a lot of stuff, so it will be tasty and value for money. I got everyone else to bring the booze, so that is the expensive part.
We should have 6oz imported American Bubba burgers A friend of mine from the base got them for me... They were great at their July 4th celebration.
Cheap ASDA chicken marinated, Cheap Lidl pork chops, Jamican jerk style, Sausages from Aldi. Home made rice salad, german potato salad and American baked beans. Salad from the garden.... Asda rolls, American sauces (from the base), so should be OK. (I got every one to bring desert too). Just need some sun!

Well, best get going, I offered to saw up some logs for a friend first thing.... will be a busy day.

Cheers

Good Morning N9eav, Juliejim & all to follow.

Looks like another warm and sunny day today. Not suprisingly more washing will be done, seem to have so much more in the holidays.

Later today MIL is picking up DS to take him away for the w/e in their caravan - first time ever she has offered, DD refused to go but at least there wont be any argurements this weekend. I am really looking forward to Sat & Sun. Although I work from home the phone hasnt stopped ringing this week (mainly with problems) so it will be nice and peaceful.

Havnt done an online shop yet - need to sit down and menu plan - dont think Ive cooked a proper meal since we came home

Barbeque last night was lovely, very good value - yours sounds v impressive N9eav

Best be off - quick surf then banking - have a great day.x

Oh & managed to watch some of Economy Gastronomy on iplayer - it is really easy to use isnt it - thanks again.

    Morning everyone.

N9eav - post a pic of the cake, would love to see your creation.

As for bugs in flour - hmmmmm well amd glad I am not in Africa. It's hard enough keeping my cool infront of the kids with the bugs we have here. At least I don't generally have to deal with stuff on a daily basis like that.
Anyway here's hoping the evil weevils have gone for good. My dad is shopping at Ikea for some storage jars so I can keep stuff safe (or contained depending on how you want to look at it ;))
Have my mindee today so would like to whip up a quick batch of hob nobs soon. They have fruit for snack in the morning and then a HM biscuit in the afternoon. Hob nobs are by far the quickest and easiest to make.
Tea will be chicken and rice I think, kids will have a cooked meal lunchtime with my mindee (as it's easier in the middle of the day).
Hope it stays dry so we can all go out into the garden (although by rights rain shouldn't stop us either ;))

Hugs to those that need them.
Have a good day all OS or not.

  • Morning Guys!

Have been up since 5 as I had a bad dream and couldnt re-settle. Just waiting on the nurse.

Beds have been stripped and 1 load of bedding in WM and the next will go in after. Also have a towel wash to go on. I am hoping that the sun will come out so that it can be dried outside.

DD is off camping today with friends, so OH & I have a peaceful weekend. If I am up to it, we may go out for dinner later. I feel like tarting myself up and going out for a nice dinner. The portions are smaller, so I should be able to eat it all:D

Anyway, reserving my energy for later.

    Hugs to all.

    Morning all,

Bit dull here weather wise, still off to work for me, its my last day for two weeks :T. Tomorrow night my sis is having a huge bbq about 50 people invited, my dd is off out shopping with her today to start things off, I can see most of tomorrow sorting that out

Macaroni cheese with garlic bread and salad for tea, dd can cook it, its her day, and its veggie so she cant be squeemish about it :D

Did a huge wash last night and got it mostly dry on the line, its now on the airer cos it looks like rain. Need to tidy round this morning. Do another wash tonight and hoover through.

DD got her first ever pay packet yesterday :T they were so pleased with her at work, it was just a 2 week holiday job, but I am very proud of her, none of her friends have a job, and they are not willing to get one, although they are envious of the money

Ok have good days all xx

    Morning all:hello:

My lot are back from camping bringing with them the wonderful smell of woodsmoke which has impregnated everything. OH still smelt of it after he'd showered and I can't say I minded:D They haven't been to a site where fires were allowed before and they've been having great fun.

I'm on the third load of washing and really hoping for 'grand drying day'.

I'm planning to finish off the crab apple jelly I started yesterday today, hoping to get at least 5 jars. I collected far fewer apples than anticipated, but I'm not sorry;)

OH has gone to work, a bit odd as they went camping last Tuesday, so he worked Monday then had 8 days holiday and is now back at work for a day:confused:

Lunch will be pitta pizzas or baked beans on toast and tea will be kedgeree with smoked haddock. I think there is some choc fudge pudding leftover:j

    Have a good day everybody.

Lots of barbecues going on around here - shall we all go to N9eav's today and Redruby's sister's tomorrow? Hope they both go really well and that the sun shines for you all weekend!

N9eav - you sound so organised, I shall have to import you to do my barbecues here! My DS1 worked in Zambia and Zimbabwe some years ago and he said the insects were horrid - flying things as big as helicopters! Yuk!

Well, because it seems the sun is shining over there, I feel I can describe the weather here without sounding as if I am gloating! The sky is bright blue, no clouds, full sun and the temperature is already about 27 degrees. It looks wonderful out there - the farmer's cows are all grazing contentedly, along with the horse in the next field; I can see them from my office window; there are birds splashing about in the water on the bird table, and I have a huge number of tomatoes to pick.

PenPin - go on, get yourself all dressed up and have a great time. It will do you the power of good. Hope you have a good day.

Essex-Girl - glad you found iPlayer!

Thriftlady - does that mean that woodsmoke is an aphrodisiac?!

Last night's Navarin of Lamb was delicious so will definitely do that again. Tonight we are having the chicken thighs with biriyani from the Econ Gastro show, except that it will be chicken legs instead. Pudding will be the rest of yesterday's bread-and-butter pudding.

I have a huge pile of ironing which should have been done yesterday. I should do it this morning before it gets too warm.

Hope you all have a great day.

Urrgh I hate the smell of woodsmoke

Just thought I would let you know that I have just paid the last part of OH's horrendous (sp) tax bill - you have to ring first thing as the lines are engaged all day. Such a weight off my mind. Only mine left & that should be manageable (sp again!).

Mioliere, glad you are having such lovely weather, the sun hasnt come out yet here but I believe its on its way :D

    Hi there folks

Been a bit MIA lately with holidays, getting my oldest ready for school and really not feeling up to it. I have been keeing and eye on things though.

Todays weather is awful and have so much washing to do. Been up with ds2 since 2am wih some sort of tummy/sickness bug.....Not pleasent and hence the washing. Was hoping to take them out today but looks like a day close to the loo needed!!!

Looking for inspiration to get back on track as surprise surprise the money ex oh promised to give for the kids hasnt materialised in 3 months and dropped hours on the premise I would get the money so looking for all ways to sort the finances and make sure my boys dont miss out and learn the value of money.

Looking for inspiration for packed lunches as still not sure wether to go down the school lunch or packed lunch route. Just feel he would eat more if it was a school lunch oh I dont know can't seem to make decisions these days.

On the upside on holiday for 2 weeks so hoing to get back in the way of baking and stuff. Any ideas on organising my life are more than welcome head is just permanently fuzzy at the min.

Hugs to all that need them x
Although I get lonely  as a single mother there are always two smiling angels ready to give me the biggest hug in the world. Love you babies :grouphug:

    Morning all:j:j
The suns out here again this moring so all good. I hope that it lasts.

Twin one is still ill. If anything she is worse than yesterday. We have both of them booked into the doctors at 9:30am this morning. Hoping to get somthing to make her feel better. She had another bad nights sleep. It was gone 10:00pm by the time she went off. My wife had to lay with with her on our bed to get her to go off. Just so twin two could go to sleep.
Our twins go to bed at 7:00pm every night and we normaly dont have any trouble with them going off thay are both asleep by 7:30pm normaly. so for twin one to be still awake at 10:00pm we know there is somthing wrong. But not sure what? apart from her eyes being gunked up.
    and teething.
She keepsgetting herself really upset, which then makes her sick wiith in turn upsets her again.
Well lets hope the doctor can help.
both there temps are a bit better this moring. Twin two is not too bad really just the hgunked up eyes and a abit of a temp.

Lunch today will be homemad carrot and parsnip soup.
No plans for diner tonight as of yet.

I hope that you all have a good day and that the wether is lovley for you all.
    Enjoy:j:j
