An important request has been placed on the 1st page of MSE Click here I don't ordinarily check the main site regularly, but simply follow the Money Tip links. So click, read & absorb. All the important information can be found at this page.

Well this is the first time I have disagreed with Martin. :-X
As I said on the other thread, I don't think it is right for anyone to ask for or suggest anyone give a particular amount.
Donating is a very personal decision and I know a suggestion along these lines has already put one person off from sending what they classed as a trivial amount.
(Not me I hasten to add, I've already donated.)
I think everyone who wants to donate, will give as much as they can afford anyway.
Just because people on this site may have saved x amount, does not mean they then have this available to use.
So sorry Martin, I agree with your sentiments but not the suggestion. :-/Herman - MP for all!0 -

I hope everyone sends what they can and don't worry if that's ten pound, one pound or a penny.......................after all pennies make pounds make tens of pounds etc0 -
I agree with this to an extent. But also remember this is about a percentage of the amount you save - not of the cash you have.
Without using the site - you would be paying more - so its a proportion of the gain. However on the back of this sentiment i am amending slightly the tip i am sending out right now.Martin Lewis, Money Saving Expert.

Point taken Martin, but I have to say that I buy the things I buy, purely because I have got a good deal on them. I wouldn't buy them otherwise.
If I need to buy Christmas presents for example, I wouldn't start off with a particular list and then try to find the best prices, I would check to see what offers are on then consider that item as a present.
So it's not a situation whereby I would plan to spend £20 say on a hairdryer, then find it on here for £15, thereby saving £5.
I would see what I could find for £15 and give that item if it was suitable.
A bit of a simplistic example, I know, but it's meant as an illustration of my point.
I wouldn't have saved anything as it wasn't my intention to spend a certain amount on an item in the first place.
I'm not sure if my reasoning is understandable? It makes perfect sense to me, it's just a little hard to make the point clearly in print.
Anyway, it's all academic really. It was just a point I felt I wanted to raise, but it (quite rightfully) is not as important as the raising of funds by whatever method for this appeal.
I applaud the time and energy you've given in support of this, not to mention the sizeable donation you have also made.Herman - MP for all!0 -
OK I see now where you're coming from.
The point was i was thinking about costs cut not things bought.
So i've changed the phrasing!Martin Lewis, Money Saving Expert.

I will be bag packing in my local M & S tomorrow with a lot of people from the local Christian Aid group for the appeal so if you are shopping for New Years Eve/Day give generously if you come across a group of bag-packers; throw paper money into the bucket you can go without a few extra goodies, there a some whose new year is not too bright I have already been given £50 to put in by a friend to put in. ;D0

The Salvation Army have also launched an appeal for the tsunami aid effort.
Salvation Army Appeal
They have already got 16 groups of support teams out there and will be sending more, they are also helping out with survivors coming back by meeting them at the airport giving them counselling, clean clothes etc....
Every penny raised will go directly to the appeal.0 -
I've just read the messages here, and it's easy to see why the British public has raised so much money for the Tsunami appeal. I'm broke after Christmas, but have just donated (with giftaid) as much as I could afford.
I've also been to the hunger site (mentioned in Martin's last weekly mail) and clicked to give food for free. I've no idea whether it goes to the same charities or not, but figure that theres a good few million people that need help than there were last week.

Sorry to spout, but that's my 'virgin' money saving post, now that I've popped my cherry, I'll calm down - HonestAlways on the hunt for a bargain.
Always grateful for any hints, tips or guidance as to where the best deals are:smileyhea0 -
Yes ive been in tears too, and will be donating our office lottary fund winings soon, with work mates approval.
However i am disapointed that our "close cousins" across the pond dont seem to have been as generous as us...government or people.
And from BBC info lots of Euro countries are the same.
How and why are the rest of the world not giving as much as us?Charles J0 -
We are cleaning our house and taking all decs down today (couldn't stand the pine needles in our feet any longer!!). In the midst of the great clean-up I put an empty plastic storage box on the table marked TSUNAMI and we have scouted around the house for useful unwanted items - some from this Christmas and some that was never opened from year before!!! We found brand new baby's bibs, boxes of teabags etc that were in christmas hampers, baby wipes (BOGOF's) plus freebies I have got this week since discovering this site. The box was full within half an hour!!!
My son and his girlfriend are going back to Lincoln for the night to see in the New Year with their uni friends so I have sent them with bin liner to collect stuff from all their friends.
Now going to check whether the stuff is more useful to the appeal as it is or by us selling it off and sending the cash.
I think this whole event has been so horrific that we tend to think whatever we do can never be enough so we don't bother doing anything!something missing0
