I've mentioned this before, I booked my parents tickets with Ryanair and put my fathers known (middle)name rather than his first name down on the ticket. They enquired it on check in but let him thru. As someone else said because both names were on the passport it wasn't a problem.

However someone else has had a problem with another airline and was stung for pretty large amount.

But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more

Well i have had issues with BA regarding this.
Were you traveling beyond the UK/Europe?

An increasing number of countries are now requiring "advanced passenger information" to run criminal/security checks before the aircraft is allowed to depart. For these destinations it is ESSENTIAL that the name on your ticket/booking matches the name on your passport EXACTLY.

Otherwise, the passenger will be refused entry on arrival and the airline will be fined a SIGNIFICANT sum for missing the discrepancy during check-in/boarding.

There's no point blaming the airlines (as is so often the case on here) when the rules are clear, strict and beyond their control.

    It's very simple really.
The name on your ticket must match your name as it is on your passport. If that isn't the case, any airline or customs official can legally deny you exit from or entry to the U.K. or your destination airport.

It really isn't worth taking that risk no matter how many people tell you otherwise.

I've had a client like that who resolutely insisted that his tickets be booked in a varient of his first name. He managed ok on a couple of flights then got refused entry onto the Eurostar at St Pancras. Let's just say that he's relented now that he's had a dressing down from his boss who had to pay nearly £400 for an unused ticket and all down to the guy's vanity.

But people use middle names without telling their friends, some people use names that aren't their name at all.
I'm one of those who uses a name that is neither my first nor my middle name (it looks like a variant of my first name, but isn't!). However, I make sure that any friends who might be booking a flight for me know my full "real" name (and how to spell it, as there are two ways). :o

Similarly when booking flights for friends I always check how their name appears on their passport. Take the name "Michelle" for example – do you know for certain that your friend spells it with a double "l" or are you just assuming that?

Airlines say the name on the ticket MUST match the name on the passport exactly – you can't really go wrong if you work on the premise they will accept nothing less. ;)
If I don't respond to your posts, it's probably because you're on my 'Ignore' list.

Thanks for people's contributions. I had to phone easyjet anyway, about something different, and I actually spoke to a really nice and helpful person in their horribly named 'customer experience department'. He said that he too was called by his second name, and changed my name on the flights for free (should have been about £22 per flight). Sweet :)
:jHow lucky were you? I think talking to someone who also uses there middle name really helped you here OP, glad you got a good outcome.

I agree. Also, a bit of common sense is handy too :)

As I said earlier, this happens to me as I regularly fly from and to the Middle East (booked by the company) but I've never had a problem with it.

Could it possibly be that this budget airline is deliberately being pedantic to make some easy money?
