im sorry if im the only one thinking this, imagine if, at the same time of booking someone else wanted the place, and because of this, they booked somewhere else, that wasnt as good, cause you beat them to it.
Non refundable means just that, non refundable.
I love money saving expert forums, but some parts of them really annoy me, like getting away with parking ticket forums, reclaiming PPI forums.

Maybe a forum, how to get your money back for being stupid would be more appropriate. na just kidding... lol

Seriously, they ask for a huge deposit as normally there would be high demand, but how many people book with less than a year left...

All this talk of watchdog, for not refunding a non refundable deposit? its all rather alien to me?? If you signs terms and conditions you live with them. I personally think your wasting your time trying legal case, etc. Deposit, is just that, an element of risk for both sides for waiting so long for something.

If it was me, and a company give back deposits, I'd be more worried if it was a going concern in 12 months time... and losing the deposit, as they have entered administration!!
    Plan
    1) Get most competitive Lifetime Mortgage (Done)
    2) Make healthy savings, spend wisely (Doing)
    3) Ensure healthy pension fund - (Doing)
    4) Ensure house is nice, suitable, safe, and located - (Done)
    5) Keep everyone happy, healthy and entertained (Done, Doing, Going to do)

Hi, I would use the 'sugar is sweeter than vinegar' approach. You are obviously a fair person who understands that a contract is a contract, but you have a very valid point that you are cancelling in more than enought time to rebook. Ask to speak to someone in authority, appeal to their better nature, be polite, be friendly, offer to do the legwork yourself (ie selling the date), and offer to pay a mutually agreeable fee for admin costs incurred so far. If you get anything back, then thank them profusely ;)

I would also phone CAB too, just to get an insight into your rights.

    Good luck!

I will go for this approach - my view is that you should always treat others how you expect to be treated.

if they don't give our deposit back I will look into selling the date (need to double check the T&C)

lol - and failing that will sulk!
  • Please could you PM me with the venue name as I live in Kent, and may be looking at getting married next year so would be interested to know further details.

Have currently only really considered the Turkey Mill in Maidstone.

    Thanks!

I agree with what you say.....I am venting frustration!

we are on good terms still so perhaps we should go through with the booking and just have one wild party :-)
  • Whereabouts in Kent are you?

Also wedding insurance wouldn't have helped in this instance - every policy excludes the couple deciding not to get married
Don't worry about typing out my username - Call me COMP

thought that would be the case - but was hoping there was a happy answer as it is a fair amount of cash to lose :-(

seeing as it is so far away, I thought they might be nice (haha)

the silly thing is that I can be a pain and not release the date to the last second thus minimising the timeframe to rebook (not nice I know!), even if they offered a 50% return then we would free the date up straight away!

If they are being awkward it might be worth mentioning this to them. They could be left with just your deposit rather than the full price from someone else, so that may make them rethink whether they will give you anything back or not.

    PLAN B...

    Find a new partner... Who...
    1) wants to get married
    2) whos birthday it is near the date!
    Plan
    1) Get most competitive Lifetime Mortgage (Done)
    2) Make healthy savings, spend wisely (Doing)
    3) Ensure healthy pension fund - (Doing)
    4) Ensure house is nice, suitable, safe, and located - (Done)
    5) Keep everyone happy, healthy and entertained (Done, Doing, Going to do)
  • All you can do is ask them very very nicely, they have no obligation to refund a penny even if they rebook, even if you find them someone who wants the date. You have to simply ask them nicely.
