How do Ryanair police carry-on weight allowances??

Hi,

I have just returned from a short break to Ireland (flying out of Manchester) carrying just hand luggage and checking in online. Great price of £5 for 2! My partner and I stuck to the allowances religiously based on Martin's articles so we avoid having to curse about Ryanair when we get back. One thing I'm puzzled about is how Ryanair can police whether you are within the 10kg carry-on allowances? There are no scales at the gates and I can't envisage this happening but you never know with Ryanair. Am I missing a trick here?

BW,

Johnny

Stick to the allowance and you ought not to have a problem. Simples.

They certainly can weigh it, although I have only ever heard stories that they have. I haven't actually seen this happen and they have never weighed my bag.
  • Knowing Ryanair, I imagine they would take the stance that all customers' hand luggage is over the 10kg allowance and that it is the responsibility of each individual customer to prove to Ryanair that their hand luggage is below the threshold.

Oh yes there are! Depends on airport exactly how they do it. At Carcassonne
in France (small airport) for instance they 'pre-check' your boarding cards next to the scales of the check-in desks and use those. At Stanstead there
are scales just as you go into security. Many airports are now getting scales at the gates. It's a good money earner, Also look out for the new cardboard boxes at the gates, exactly the correct size of the hand baggage.

Stick to the rules, turn up early and no problem.

The only time I have seen it weighed is by security staff at Stansted who sometimes choose to weigh your bag if it looks particularly big/ heavy.

my sister got stopped the other week.
although its the same small suitcase she has used on several ocassions, the airhostesses insisted it had to go in the hold. 'it was too big'
they told her that unless she paid the £30 she would not be able to fly. so she paid. i said i would have made them measure or weigh it and then if it was too big/heavy to pay but she said she couldnt have done that (is a bit reluctant to stand up for herself)
i think they do it randomly. and no doubt have a target to achieve on how many people they can get to put their luggage in the hold.
its still baffles me as to how an entire flight of people with bags/suitcases can all be put in overhead cabins.

they can't. that's why they stipulate the sizes, so that the bags can fit under the seat infront of you (as long as you don't mind having no space for your feet...this is when travelling with children comes in handy :D)

They are doing checks before security at Stansted and Treviso.

At Skavsta (Stockholm) I have had my hand luggage weighed on a scale at the security check twice out of maybe five flights the last six months. They use a portable scale so it is quite possible...
