in France (small airport) for instance they 'pre-check' your boarding cards next to the scales of the check-in desks and use those. At Stanstead there
are scales just as you go into security. Many airports are now getting scales at the gates. It's a good money earner, Also look out for the new cardboard boxes at the gates, exactly the correct size of the hand baggage.
Stick to the rules, turn up early and no problem.
I reckon it will only be a matter of time before they have scales at the gates but they won't be able to weigh every bag surely or else that catchy little music they play when a flight arrives on time will become redundant! Unsurprisingly, Ryanair were flogging portable scales in their in-flight magazine for the AMAZING price of £25. I'm thinking there are a couple of things you can do to beat the system. I'll give them a try the next time and let you know.
Thanks for all the replies,

As with all things that are used for commercial purposes all the scales that are used need to be backed up with a certificate of calibration that has to be issued every 12 months ( a EU requirement) so if you do get stopped for o/w bag unless they have on display this calibration certificate then dispute it, be UN British like and make a fuss.
2 options . You will be let through no fuss.or they will have a certificate to show you !
Another option they may stop you boarding ! in that case they are in breach of contract !"Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain."

Just a thought - do you still have to do online check in if you bags to go in the hold?0
