070 Numbers

My latest mobile phone bill showed a charge for a call to a 070 number, even though (I thought) I have an inclusive package. On querying this with Orange Customer Services, the agent explained that 070 numbers were the Premium numbers of the mobile world and were not part of the package.

On checking this with family, friends and colleagues, none of them knew about this. it doesn't appear to be widely "advertised".

Has anybody out there had the same problem?

    UK Mobile Numbers start 075/076/077/078/079

Calls to 070 personal numbers from mobile phones can cost as much as £2 for a 10 or 15 second call.

Who were you calling on a 070 number? One of those naughty lady chat lines? If you want to get your rocks off you gotta pay for it :@)

Its not necessarily "naughty lady chats" - I received an email spam message (usual stuff won the lottery because someone in zimbabwe bought the ticket for me). The email contained an 070 - which I called for only a few seconds to see if it was real. Got charged by the network for 4p.

Last week I sent Ofcom a letter complaining about 070 numbers, awaiting reply.

A text message arrived saying that I had missed a call, so I just returned the call and got a recorded message asking if I had an accident and wanted to claim compensation. No company name was mentioned.

  • I got caught too by dialling an 0701 number which a company was advertising as its mobile number. Only to realise once the bill came through that this was a premium number. I even called OFCOM to find out why a simple message could not be played before connecting each premium call. They told me that they used to do this but then businesses complained so they had to remove it !

I thought OFCOM's were here to protect the consumer ?

Anyhow O2 advised me they have a long list of premium numbers. Looking at these please be aware that 07744 & 07755 are also premium numbers charged at 25p per minute. So everyone pls beware !!
  • I agree that Ofcom is not doing enough to publicise premium rate numbers, I was under the impression that all premium rate numbers had to be preceeded by a voice stating that this was a premium rate number and would cost X £ per minute.
It would be great to have a list we now know that 07744 & 0755 plus all 070 numbers are premium, are there any more ?

This is ridiculous. There so many numbers you need to remenber that charge. OFCOM should make all of this alot more user friendly. I have been with Talk Talk for about a year and each month they manage to bill me for all kinds of extras. What I do is stick a list of numbers that I get charged for next to my phone, so i know not to stay too long on the phone.
  • ...Seemingly not reserved only for chatlines etc. I've just been sent a text message asking me to call an 070 number for 247 spares (car parts). No mention of call charges without an extensive search of T&Cs. Another con; dubious whether they even have anything really to do with car parts.
