I have a TomTom v2 and I've never plugged it into a computer and the GPS works just fine! Updating it like that might make it quicker to get a first fix, e.g. 10 seconds instead of 30 seconds, but after that it makes no difference.0

You can either tell the sat nav to avoid that bit of road for x miles, or just turn off and head in a different direction.0 -

wonderful chaps thanks everyone for all your help0 -
but you have to be a bit persistant about heading off in other direction otherwise it will try to put you back on to the original road until it decides there is a shorter (depending on setting) route aheador just turn off and head in a different direction.0 -
I have to say I found the traffic receiver on TomToms to be well worth the money on major roads and motorways. It isn't spot on all the time (mind you the number of times I've been doing 70mph in tailback according to the radio- neither is it!).
It won't pick up everything- and the further north you go the worse it gets, but it is a good indicator of motorway jams combined with the radio. Last time I was on the M6 it piped in 'delay on your route now 110 minutes- faster route available' and helped me avoid a nasty M6 traffic jam!0 -

How about this one? Only £50 (was £43 last week) and you can easily put tomtom software on that will make it virtually identical to the One v4 you linke to at Halfords.0
