Generally they don't need fitting. There's a plastic sucker that sticks to your windscreen, and a lead to go to the cigarette lighter. Just be sure to take it off when you are parked.

I'd recommend the TomTom ONE. The one that's on there for £114.99. It does everything a sat nav needs to do with none of the useless fancy extras you pay much more for.

As the other poster says, you don't get a satnav 'fitted', the new TomTom's have a flip out sucker pad on the back which you attach to your windscreen. Which you should remove and take with you every time you leave the car, if you don't wish your windows to be smashed.

Also worth wiping the mark off as sometimes they'll go for the window just to check you haven't dumped it in the glovebox.

why the huge difference in price

Different units have different features, just like any electronic device. Some have added things like in built MP3 players, things which automatically update to tell you if there are traffic jams on your route etc, you name it, it's in there!

No. If you want to update the maps you may have to use your computer, but if you are happy with the included maps, and considering roads don't change *that* often, you'll be fine without using a PC.

Then you'll want something like the TomTom ONE I mentioned,

    Ney bother.

thanks, with your help i'm almost there now but can i ask

i do a fair amount of motorway driving, so you know the tom tom you suggested will that one tell me if there are traffic jams on my route?

if so, will it give a different route or will i have to go back to my maps and find a route myself?

I think with that one you have to purchase an additional traffic information receiver to make it work. I've found it in practice to be rubbish anyway, better of listening to the radio.

All sat navs have the feature to allow you do avoid part of the route and all will reroute you should you decide not to follow whatever route it is telling you to take.

right, ok ta, so if a road - motorway was closed due to an accident then the sat nav will re route me automatically?

    this is what i'm buying

No.. You have to do it manually unless you have the traffic receiver (which i personally think are useless and VERY unreliable). As said, you're better off just listening to the local radio.

It will only re-route automatically if you turn off before the satnav tells you to, or if you take a wrong turn.

Free fitting - just let them do it and show you how it works, takes all of a minute to do if that!

As for updating, I personally have to keep updating my TomTom XL V2 at least once a week if I plan to do any long journeys. This is to update the GPS Fix, not the actual maps though. May be different for the one you posted and may not need updating at all, but if you find that you're losing signal alot then it will need updating.

You don't need any of the additional items no, but you could get the case if you're worried about damaging it or whatever while it's out of the car. I didn't bother though.
This thread has me so pumped, I headbutted my dog and we both screamed.
