I have nothing really constructive to add but just whant to give some more support to the OP. I'm a big girl, have been for most of my life. I am always on some kind of diet but the one thing I have total control over are my clothes and my apperance. I'm no supermodel but I dress well, wear make up and get my hair done every couple of weeks. To the bemusement of skinner girls I get lots of attention. This isn't because I'm stunning its because I'm confident. Its kind of an artificial confidence that the slap and the clothes create but its my front and I like it as armour.

Not all fat birds are built the same - have a good look at yourself in the mirror - what are your good bits? Do you have a waist? Good boobs etc? Firstly you need to emphasise these things - get some good bras - they can take lbs from your silhouette and some hold you in knickers. These are as cheap as chips from Asda. Then go through your wardrobe and be ruthless, chuck away (or be mse and ebay) any clothes that you do not feel amazing in. If its even slightly shapeless, faded or rubbish bin it!

Next hair and makeup - Go and get a good cut and colour. If you have a hairdressing college near you then you can get a trainee to do this for next to nothing. Don't worry about mistakes as the teachers supervise and they are highly qualified. Also get your eyebrows threaded - the effect is like a mini facelift and it costs less than a fiver!

I agree with the youtube comment - MichellePhan, Enkore and others are all great and give excellent tutorials - Get a good foundation and experiment with colours - going to a counter and getting a makeoveris an excellent idea. If the women dare to look down their noses at you just get the makeover and then buy the products from a rival counter - payback! Bobbi Brown women are normally quite nice - I'd stay away from MAC etc as the colours are a bit much for people not used to makeup and the people who work there are full of attitude!
There are many things in life that will catch your eye, only a few will catch your heart. Pursue those.
  • I think it doesnt matter about what size u are, it's about ur self confidence. I'm very lucky really, i have a husband who has seen me grow from a size 10/12 13 yrs ago to a size 20/22 now, we have 2 great kids together and he loves me for what i am. I do suffer sometimes from a lack of self confidence sometimes but i try to not let it affect me, i always used to wear makeup on a daily basis, i have done this when i was slim 18 yr old till now a fat 32 yr old lol. I have freckles on my face and i think i used make up as a mask, my husband has told me for years i look better without it and dont need to wear it as i have nice skin. So for the 1st time in my adult life these past few months i have only worn mascarra and nude/brown eye shadow, unless i go out, it has saved me a fortune lol. I am lucky i have nice curly hair which suits me, but i do go have it cut often, I also dress well, i try to dress in items that make the most of the good features i have like my boobs lol, i think a good place to start is good underwear always! yay for bridget jones belly pants lol.
Make the most of yourself and love what u have, dont sell yourself short.

I work with ladies of all sizes, and they do feel better when they have treatments - whether it's an eyebrow wax or a massage (if you feel confident enough for that).

It's amazing the difference looking after yourself can make - I feel great after a new haircut, even if I've just gotten a trim, it's all blowdryed and styled :D

With clothes, you don't want to be wearing skin tight - not really a great look on anyone except the tiniest of girls, but neither do you want to be wearing huge big baggy t-shirts - they just make you look even bigger and hide any shape that you may have :) A good bra is essential - makes the girls look great :D

I think empire line tops (think that's right?) - the ones that go in a bit under your bust and then kinda flow over the lumpy bits - look best, IMO.

Make-up, and you don't need loads, just evens out your skin tone and, if you're like me, just makes you feel better.

And, I really agree with jojo here - smile! Takes years off :j

I have alwayy wanted to do this but like you say some can be frightening and seem to look down their noses ( heavily painted ) at you lol I must say the idea of sitting on a stool at a makeup counter in the middle of a store is scarey
The ladies at MAC, if you have one near you, are fabulous - they're all trained make-up artists (where at the other counters, except benefit, they'll more likely be beauty therapists, and usually not fully qualified ones at that) and they're great. A lady at benefit attacked me with highlighter - literally the whole top half of my face was glowing  - and the girl at MAC helped me out and reapplied my make-up for me :T

Bless you. I can relate to how you feel

At my worst I make sure I put on some tinted moisturiser and cover stick and ensure my I am showered so I dont look like an extra from Day of the Dead.

It doesnt matter what your size you are still beautiful, but only if you think you are !

My mum once told me that even though I was fat, I didn't smell. That was a great compliment coming from her. She couldn't understand why I didn't think so.
  • You really will feel better for making a bit of effort. Think structured clothes rather than tight or baggy. Tailored dresses and trousers, shirts with shape etc, a nice pair of fitted jeans. A good pair of comfy heels etc. Make an effort with accessories to glam up plain clothes. Try a book like Trinny & Susannah but don't take it all as gospel. Also find yourself some celeb role models, women with a similar figure who look amazing. There are more "larger ladies" out there than you would think, even if not huge in the scheme of things looking at the way they dress can give you ideas and reassure you that it is possible.

Beauty counters - I find the posher the shop the nicer the staff for some reason!

Bobbi Brown staff know what they're talking about and won't make you look like a clown, if there's a counter near you pop along when it's quiet.

I'd also like to say that EVERYONE can dress up however they want whatever their size, you deserve to feel happy! Please don't put off wearing nice clothes until you lose weight - you are still the same person and worth exactly as much, your weight has nothing to do with your entitlement to a nice life!
Even if you just buy some comfy undies and some new tee shirts in colours that give you a boost, team them with a smile and a squirt of your favourite perfume and you'll look FABULOUS :D

I know exactly how you feel , I have fibromyalgia and some days cannot even brush my hair without being in a lot of pain. lol

Well then you should give yourself a break! If you're in that much pain, it's amazing that you can even think about clothes/beauty/hair/size etc. You're doing well to keep going.

I do think you'd enjoy it though - I've just had my first haircut in a year (skint student - long hair...) and was treated to it and highlights by lovely BF. I feel a million dollars, so I got a pedicure as well (my treat to myself). I may be lardy from being tied to a desk writing all day, but damn it, I have great hair and perfect toenails!

Have you thought about a cheap spa day? Then you can get hair/eyebrows/pedi/make up etc done all at once, and maybe a backrub or seaweed wrap whatsit thingy for luck? Lastminute seem to have cheapish deals, although I've seen the best ones on Travelzoo.

Chin up! (stops the double chin showing....:D:D)

Its so true pain has a massive influence and frankly, despite needing to tackle weight (more weight ultimately means more pain: stress on joints, back ache etc etc) you also need to cut yourself some slack. I'm at the moment seeing the result of less pain: and its extraordinary how much differnce it makes: you don't realise quite how much it can impact after a while.

Its about confidence not size.....i'm a size 14/16 and 4 months pregnant, i feel and look a mess and have ever since having my first child 6 years ago. I keep seeing ladies my size or bigger and i think they look great. I always feel better after having my hair done and putting on makeup, i look very ill without makeup. Can't stand going to a hairdressers where i have to look at myself in the mirror for far too long, so i have a mobile hairdresser come to the house and colour it myself, i hate spending the £20 on the hairdresser but i always feel great afterwards so perhaps i should do it more often. I've had my makeup done at several counters and bobbi brown was the best i looked a pretty version of myself, natural makeup and the girl was lovely, i really should go again when i have money to spend. Benefit was the worse make over ever i think they are told to slap on as many products as possible on top of the makeup you are already wearing, i actually had to go and buy some face wipes to remove it, some of the benefit stuff is nice, just the young girls don't have a clue on how to apply it. I too tend to keep nice clothes for best but never get round to wearing them, have just bought myself a few nice maternity bits and when i'm home i change into a vest and pj bottoms, but i bought myself nice ones and binned all the tatty slobbing clothes. A few nice and well fitting bras and pants always make me feel good, rather than loads of cheap things. I'm finally learning the quality and not quantity rule. You should buy yourself a few nice bits now rather than waiting to lose some weight, get a haircut and start putting on makeup everyday. I've let myself slip abit seeing as its the school holidays which is probably why i'm feeling a bit down, must make that hair appointment.
