You only have to look at Susan Boyle to see what a decent cut and colour, eyebrow shape and makeup can do.

I have gained almost 4st in the last 2 years and i'm a bit the same, i think that come september when the kids go back to school i shall be heading to the gym most days
I agree it helps to make an effort
Good for you! Is there nothing you can do now with the kids in tow? Nature walks maybe? the park? Cycling? Taking them swimming? What I'm learning is that when you have a health and/or weight problem, to work at it requires us to fit in what we need to do with life...putting it off makes it harder, even when the time comes that it should be easy.
I've been really enjoying th last two weeks but stretching like yoga/pilates and lifting, and walking up/down hills has been banned. One of the unfailing exercies I have is a twice daily walk which includes two small hills, and so I'm driving when I'd sually walk. Instead, as well as making extra walks back and forward on flat ground (which fel a bit silly, walking then turning) I'm also doing things I can do between other jobs. anyway: I was thnking as well as giving you a warm up head start for september your kids might naturally develop good habits for later life?0 -
I have alwayy wanted to do this but like you say some can be frightening and seem to look down their noses ( heavily painted ) at you lol I must say the idea of sitting on a stool at a makeup counter in the middle of a store is scarey
go to the counters at a time when its very likely to be quiet, say a monday morning
good luck0 -
Oh, the difference it makes is incredible!
I would get your eyebrows shaped first - you discover you have eyes again. Then you will probably think that you want to show them off a bit...which leads to a simple natural look - a pale beige eyeshadow over the lid, a bit of black/brown mascara and a natural beige pink gloss..
Then you can feel confident enough to approach the ladies on the counter - I found the Clinique ladies (and a gent) were the most non-scary, the girl on a YSL counter incredibly sympathetic, the Clarins ones nice (but a bit orange - they give me tons of freebies so I can work out what I like best) and the guy on the Chanel counter a sweetie! I normally go Monday morning mid month, as they are feeling the pinch by then and get even more helpful if they think you are likely to come back to them. A big smile and they are normally in their element...
And then you can decide whether you want your hair done.
A clean pair of jeans and a t-shirt is fine - as long as you feel clean, fresh and tidy, the confidence comes.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Oh, and clean clothes that fit and are comfortable (ie, stuff the high heels if they make your feet hurt, and I don't care what Trinny and Suzannah said, a fixed waistband is revolting with a wobbly belly as it sinks, sags and twists) are so important. You don't have to get your wotsits out on display (whatever Gok says) but a properly fitted bra gets them off your stomach and giving you a shape - yes, a bigger shape than some, but a shape nonetheless.
I also bet that the women you thought looked worst were scowling and miserable, whereas the nicer looking ones were smiling.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
I was a size 20 - currently an 18 and on the way down to a 16 at the mo - hopefully a few more sizes to drop as well.
With clothes, I find tailoring is the answer - that and the tunic tops that you can belt at the back - never in the middle or I look like a sack of spuds with a rope round:rotfl: Always get a good bra as the amount of weight it takes off you visibly is amazing when you don't have that bolster look above your belly button! Don't go by size - do like they do in Bravissima and take in a selection of sizes into the changing rooms - make sure you wear comfy clothes when shopping so you can change easily - nothing worse than getting hot and bothered in changing rooms and NEVER take kids with you ever-ever-ever!!!
I always put on a full face unless I'm off to the gym as that's just pointless but I still put on a touch of base as I wear Bare Essential minerals and they don't sweat off too much - there's threads on here about mineral make-up (and low carbing for weight loss) I'm up to 30 lengths of the pool now despite achey arms but am increasing by 5 lengths every visit and hope to get up to 100. Gym induction is on Friday and I really hope to start burning off the fat then with the vibrating plate thingy - got one at home but it's just a clothes stand as I can't exercise at home - even the vacuum cleaner acts as a distraction!!!
I'm also going to start doing Pilates as my posture is disgraceful:rotfl: Even the kids tell me to stand up straight!
I get days when I look at myself nakey in the mirror and want to cry but make myself look pretty just to feel better. Get yoursel;f to Monsoon as they have a great sale - I got 5 tops for £46 yesterday so when I go back to work in the new term I have some nice stuff - get the current size you're in as you can always take them on or belt them - no point in waiting to lose weight as that's just depressing:pNoli nothis permittere te terere

you tube is a good place to watch makup and hair vids. Many are made by regular people who have had plenty of practise.
I can totally empathise with you when it comes to self image. Even when I'm told I look nice, I never quite believe it. I think what we have to remember is other people see us differently to how we see ourselves. Even when I've made an effort, I always think I look terrible. It is hard to overcome this self image problem, but with a little faith, we'll get there

Some great advice and support here OP.
Take it in small steps and enjoy the changes, one by one!

thanks never thought of that lolTOTAL 44 weeks lose. 6st 9.5lb :T0 -
Lots of beautiful girls on there - don't feel upset because they are all so very young and pretty - it's more because they are the demographic more likely to have access and the inclination to post videos. Bubzbeauty is a good one to start with, or MissChevious, or MichellePhan. Typing in 'beauty tips' or 'make up' will get you plenty to be going on with.
Oh, and the routines they use aren't compulsory. The principles are the same, but nothing is prescriptive.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0
