There are a few of us that are paranoid.
Back to topic though, are you sure this is the right house for you? I'm currently selling, and leaving most things behind (in fact, the wife's decided she wants to keep two of the lamp shades so I went out and bought some brand new ones that match the room better as replacements). And I will also leave a little instruction manual of how everything works (strange controls on the heating for starters), as well as a card and flowers. Some people think I'm a mug, but I think it's just common decency.
Best of luck to you!0 -
Hi Tahiti
Thanks for your post. I have thought long and hard and it is the house for me, I just find it odd that the vendor is changing their mind. I wish the vendor was like you, that would be a lovely experience.
I've rented many properties and with one, once I moved in, I discovered there were no curtain poles or curtains, the previous occupants had took them. It was horrible on the first night, and subsequent nights, having no curtains - I felt rather exposed! I also know how costly it can be to buy poles etc.
Thanks for the good luck wishes. I don't think you are a mug at all, just a decent person. When I leave my rented flat I'll do the same, leave it all nice and clean with a folder full of heating instructions etc.

MP - I'm just thinking about where you can get curtain poles etc cheaply.
In my experience, T J Hughes (if you have one) is good for decent poles and curtains at reasonable prices. I can't think of anywhere else off the top of my head unfortunately although I'm sure Argos would be cheap too.
For lighting, I was surprised by Wilkinsons recently - and they've got a sale on at the mo in my local one.
I hope it all works out - moving is stressful enough without people messing about. I know the feeling as I'm still trying to move into our new place.0 -
Hi Tahiti. Thanks for the recommedation. My main problem is that I'm having an operation about 3 weeks before the move which will limit my ability to do anything, such as shopping or putting curtain poles up! Hopefully I speak nicely to my lovely brother

I've never heard of TJ Hughes down here, but I do know Argos and the lovely Wilkos
. My mum said that energy saving lightbulbs are on offer in Safeway at the moment so I'll have to look out for those.
Thanks for all your support. I hope your move goes well.Previous debt: £14K :embarasse Debt free: Sept '03

hi mushypeas
it is amazing how petty people can be. i hope they suffer the same problem when they move into their new house
anyway, try not to let this get you down. you are moving to a new place and have a lot to look forward too.
maybe it is for the best to have new things installed (despite the price) atleast that would mean that any lingering presence of the old owners is gone from the house.
some things are needed quickly. but if you wait, think and plan well you can get some well priced items which suit your house perfectly.
meanwhile try to use freecycle. there are a lot of people who get rid of old curtains and other household items which can serve you well in the short term0 -
Hi Mr218. Ooh, I had forgotten about freecycle, that's a great idea. I'll try to sign up, thanks

I know I have a lot to look forward to, but it can get a bit stressful! I shouldn't complain though, I know others on the board are having a worse time. Also I'm only buying, not trying to sell at the same time. Gosh, that must be ever worse!
Thanks again for your advice. I might try my family and see if they have some old curtains I can borrow so I can think about what I want to buy rather than having to buy something when I first move in.

Dowling, that's a good idea, thanks jpvic. Just let a message for my gran as I think she may have some old curtains she doesn't need. I don't want my new neighbours viewing more of me than I want to!!Previous debt: £14K :embarasse Debt free: Sept '03

If they're stingy enough to take bulbs, Poundland CAN be a good place for these. I bought 8 (I think) bulbs (normal 40W Bayonet ones) for a quid a few months back. I also bought a door bell and batteries for the wife's Gran recently (if they take the door bell too!!).
If you're after energy saving bulbs, Wilkos definitely had some in my local store and they weren't overpriced, and Poundland also do them if I remember right.
I guess at least if you replace all these bits they will be exactly to your taste, and/or will hopefully last longer than the old stuff.
Hope the move goes well.
By the way, if they are as tight as they sound, make sure the meter's are read correctly! Just a thought.0
