Why do you like the things you use...

Every time someone on here asks for help deciding what piece of tech to get they thread gets hijacked with an apple verses windows (PC vs Apple) argument/discussion. I'm guilty of arguing for both sides, sometimes in the same thread and then saying they both suck compared to linux. Everyone knows I love acer laptops, you should see my car!

Anyway I'd like to know why everyone is so passionate about what they use. NOT why they dont use something.

I think linux is the best OS bar none, free, secure, resource light, and once you get used to it easy to use. I also buy into the philosophy behind opensource software. I like acer products in general though I build my own desktops, I've always had their laptops, never had a problem. I think they are great VFM and despite a bad reputation are reliable. My ideal phone would be running Android and I'm waiting for my current contract to end and a decent handset.

If money isn't an issue then Acer (for me) isn't "the best". I love ThinkPads: yes they are ugly (although I do prefer the plainess of it) and they are indestrutible, light, fast.

We are free to choose what we wish to use. Some things are better than others for certain tasks so it is up to the user to use what they want (or what they can afford to use).

Besides anything is obtainable and one could always find the means to not pay for anything if we going to go into a debate...

I think that it's human nature.
When we decide to use a product, and it seems to work, we feel that we have made a 'wise' decision (even though it might just have been a 'lucky' decision).
And once we find something that works we tend to stick with it and poo poo other people's suggestions. We close our ears and our minds.

I'm a Linux user, probably as much a lucky decision as a wise one.
I go into smug mode when I read Windows users problems with viruses and such, Linux hasn't been got at yet.

I'm also amazed when Windows users who are using proprietary software with a free trial or a crack and keygen, then wonder why it sometimes doesn't behave properly. Linux users have all the software they need, and mostly open source.

Can't say I have a massive attachment to any brand, I take the pragmatic route of whatever works is best.

Switched to intel after years and years of amd processors (intel system was cheaper+faster) for my last 2 builds. switched from nvida to ati as well because I heard there was some recent driver issues with the lastest win 7 build.

I dont "believe" in open-source software either, all products have to stand on they own merits wether open-source or proprietary, if its good great, if not it gets chucked.

I think people just like to feel a part of somthing and dont like having a certain product (read their choice) critized.

I don't know if I mentioned it, but I like Apple products. They make really beautiful gear that works very well. I've never understood the argument that something should be entirely functional; the walls in my house are pretty functional (what with holding the roof up and all), but that doesn't stop me trying to make them look nice by painting them and hanging pictures on them.

Mac OS X is the nicest operating system I've used. We have a Mac, an Ubuntu PC, and a Windows PC running Windows XP/Windows 7. Mac OS X is the easiest to use and the most functional of all of them. Having all of them set up side-by-side allows me to directly compare them; I may be a Mac fanboy, but I'm not a brainwashed Mac fanboy.

I appreciate the open source ideal, but I don't think it compares with the best commercial software. For instance, there's nothing I've found on Linux that's as good as Adobe's Photoshop or Apple's Logic Pro. For my needs, Linux is OK to play around with, but I couldn't do any serious work on it. Mac OS X is very secure and stable, but it also has lots of really good commercial software available (and lots of really good open source software too of course).

I guess for me, Mac OS X occupies the middle ground between Windows and Linux.

And that's a nice place to be.

Same as when someone asks where they can get Microsoft Office on the cheap we immediately get all the idiots saying use open office.

If they wanted open office, they would ask about open office, not Microsoft Office.

To be fair, there are many out there who have never heard of Open Office, BTW I prefer MS Office.

I prefer MS Office too, but for one reason and one reason only. Microsoft Access. Yes, it's only in the pro version which is a bit disappointing but it is so powerful once you get to grips with it.

Although my favourite operating system of all time was RISC OS for the Acorn computers. It was fast (just a few seconds between switching on and being able to use the computer). It had some very novell ideas in it for the time, but then Microsoft stole some of the good ideas from Acorn (and Apple) and merged them into Windows 95.

Well then maybe they should pay the price for MS office and stop asking stupid questions. If someones asking for a cheap office suite why should they know about openoffice?
