I've been Money Tipped! Chutzpah Haggler
I work in sales but not commission based and not door to door (work for medical diagnostics and sell direct into NHS) and I get completely irritated by door to door sales people and it is about time it was banned.

I think it is totally unfair on everyone concerned, the salesperson as at the end of the day, they are just trying to earn money like the rest of us, and the person at home who feels intruded.

It's about time companies weren't allowed to get away with commission only jobs and actually paid people a wage, it would get rid of some of the shady sales tactics and desperation that gets the public's back up.

Fortunately where I live now we don't seem to get any!

But in reality barely anyone is interested in booking a visit from a sales rep, so we spent hours walking round housing estates knocking on doors and being told to f-off and having doors slammed in our faces and didn't get paid for any of it. .............I quit at the end of the first day and so did two of the others who had started at the same time as me, it seems like nobody does that job for long, and that is how the company opperates, they get free labour untill you all quit, and then advertise for the next batch of canvassers.

We never get the same people twice, which explains why they're so cheery when they do come around as doubtless it's their first day and they're still believing the lie that they're going to make a load of money.

You'd think that even the canvassers would cotton on that now with the internet, no one ever needs a company to come to them. Most do seem to be very young though so doubtless explains their naivety and that there's always a ready supply of them.

I wondered how long it would be for someone from Anglian Windows posted on this thread.

While you are on here would you answer some general questions about your company:-

(1) What do you think of our comments about you just paying your staff commission and not a "proper" wage? Do you agree that this may bring out the worst in these sales people because they are so desperate to earn some money?

(2) What do you think of "no cold calling areas" which have been set up in some parts of the country? Could it be because people just don't want to be bothered by salesmen knocking on their doors?

(3) Why is Anglia forced to go down this route which puts them on the same level as those dodgy people who offer to re-tarmac your driveway? I would have thought that such a large company as yours would not have to resort to such tactics.
What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?

My beef with DG canvassers is that the muppets can see that I have a fully double glazed windows, a double glazed UPVC front door, UPVC fascias and soffits, and you can see the conservatory on one side of my house; and they still frickin well knock to sell something.

yeah my parents place is the same i had a guy come round my flat selling conservatories he started blabbing on and i just said can i ask what you just did to get to my front door he thought for a while and then it clicked he climbed three sets of stairs and hes said ahh you wont ahve anywhere to put the conservatory and he left hes still went up to the next level and banged on somone elses door

I (very) briefly worked as an anglian door to door canvasser, and I can't imagine a more thankless job. When I applied I was invited to an open day in the local offices, where me and the other applicants were told what a cushy job door to door canvassing is, how much we could earn, how easy it was etc. We got paid on commission, every time a customer was interested in a home improvement and booked an appointment for someone from the sales team to visit with more information, we got paid a certain amount, depending on the job.
But in reality barely anyone is interested in booking a visit from a sales rep, so we spent hours walking round housing estates knocking on doors and being told to f-off and having doors slammed in our faces and didn't get paid for any of it.
The supervisor sent me around an estate where 90% of the houses were rented, and so obviously wouldn't be interested in radical home improvements, (and allready had double glazing) but many of the people in the houses I visited told me that someone from anglian had allready knocked on their door just a few weeks before. When I asked the supervisor why I was being sent round an area that had only recently been covered and was mainly rented, she completely denied the fact and blamed the lack of interest on the weather!
I quit at the end of the first day and so did two of the others who had started at the same time as me, it seems like nobody does that job for long, and that is how the company opperates, they get free labour untill you all quit, and then advertise for the next batch of canvassers.
I honestly don't know how anyone could make a living that way, because even if you do get a few sales the pay would still work out at less than the minimum wage.
Anglian treat their customers and their workers like crap, and I would never, ever buy from them however cheap they are.

Hi,

That is exactly my experience - this was over 20 years ago - I lasted 2 days & earnted nothing!! My mate last 1 week & earnted about £10 ---

First question: do you have permission from the MSE Forum Team to post on behalf of your company?
Second question: if not, why not? It's clearly stated in the rules, so email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com and ask for permission.

Plastic windows and doors are not allowed where I live (Peak Park), it's amazing how quick they finish the phone call after you inform them :D
