Can you search around for another vet? You could ask them how much they would charge for the med and then go with the cheapest? You might find you need to travel a bit to get a better price but it might still be worth it if you can save £100's?

glad that you have had some helpful responses from our lovely forum friends.

i just wanted to reassure you that you can present a vet prescription to a regular human pharmacy - i did it many times when my cat had lymphoma. saved me a fortune x
  • I'm sorry but it sounds to me as if you are being ripped off by your vet. I can't believe that the 10mg and 20mg are the same price. Also unless this is some kind of obscure medication (which I doubt as it is for humans) they can get 20mg if they tried. Are you using up their old stock for them? You've obviously told them them that you are worried about the cost so what do they do - double the price. Phone other vets and see how much it would cost to buy from them. Also you are ENTITLED to a prescription and it should have been offered to you as well so you can buy it elsewhere. Your vet would be able to tell you where you can go to get it (can you use it in a chemist).

Don't stand for this, a good vet would pull out all the stops for you. I think you need to seriously think about changing vets. I woul even go as far as questioning whether all the treatment is actually necessary.

Just out of curiosity what is this gol plated human medication?

Sorry, forgot to add, I would get on yell.com and start going through the list of vets. ask about pricing charges, if you aren't happy with the costs, there can be alternatives.

These are reccommended on this site by Martin Lewis. They charge £2.22. per 20mg tablet (£66 for 30 20 mg tablets.) So you could try them and see if they accept vet prescriptions.

By the way, they also charge £2.22 per tablet for the 10mg, so it sounds like that bit about the 10 and 20mg being the same cost is true.

It's a common thing sadly, vets are a private business and can charge what they like!

I found this one - appears to be based in Essex, and does require a prescription. 30 x 20mg tablets is currently priced at £62.10.

Please don't assume the vets are "ripping" you off... most vets are independant businesses and can't get drugs at the wholesale prices that a lot of the online companies can. I was talking to my friend who's a vet and one drug that she knows the vets she works for get charged £10 per shot for vets4pets only get charged £2 something... Why? Because they are part of a franchise who bulk buy it... as in MASSIVE bulk buying...
So just because you can find it cheaper online does not mean your vet is ripping you off... They may not be able to buy it any cheaper than you can online and still have to make a mark up... (they might even be paying more than you have found it for :) )
If you can get it cheaper online though then brill - just remember if you buy it from abroad you need an import license or you would be breaking the law and customs and excise can be a humourless lot at times...
