We were over the moon today to find that my partner finally managed to get a job after being un employed for 4 months. In that time many things have changed. My son is no longer at home (against my will is with my Mother) and ive been placed onto ESA due to the problems revolving around my son and stress. However my ESA is means tested I belive.
At the moment we receive ESA plus top up for my partner so receive £100.95 a week which we struggle to manage on once we have paid out all the bills etc but have accepted it and got by. The gas repayments were reduced etc. All in all it left us around £60 a week to live on.
The job will be minimum wage which he doesnt mind he just wants to be back in work but it looks like with a take home pay of around £200 we are going to end up in a serious financial mess.
Firstly the rent and council tax works out around £75 a week. Then the gas will go back up by 3 times what we are paying now plus electric and water etc and the car insurance and petrol to get to work. We have kept it off the road at the moment as we couldnt afford the insurance or petrol.
It works out that we will be left with around £35 a week after everything is paid for leaving us £25 worse off than we are now.
Ive been told I will lose my ESA because of his income and as im not fit for work wont be able to claim JSA either.
I am now worried sick as we struggle already but dont want to spend our time not working.
Is there any benefits as a couple of 35 & 45 we will be entitled to to help us out? Im led to believe we wont qualify for any assistance at all and the £200 is all we will have coming in.

Not exactly a helpful answer at the moment after having worked all my life being signed on the sick for 6 months after a breakdown.

Clarification of whether the advice we were given was right was what I was actually looking for. Maybe my partner should just not take the job and we should BOTH stay on benefits as it looks like we would be better of that way, but its FAR from how we want to live? The fact he is actively wanting to get back into work should give you a clue eh?

Have you anything useful to contribute or do you just troll around here being helpful all the time? I take it your at work in the morning so maybe you should be getting some sleep?

I was told this was a helpful informative forum with people who genuinally could help those who have worked all their lives but have found themselves in a situation where at the moment its not possible. 6months off ill after working for 20 years due to a breakdown hardly warrants the cardinal sin does it? As I say when im well enough for work I have every intention of returning at the moment im not well enough for work.

You could look into DLA if you think you qualify, have a look on the website and see if it applies to you?

Thank you Claire. There is just something that seems very final about DLA and I fully intend to return to work once im fit to return sadly for the short term im not probably the next few months. However, im worried and aware that during that time we could get into serious financial strife. Ive never had cheque books or credit cards etc chosing to live within our means just there seems to be no means at the moment

You can inform of a change of circumstances when the time comes and the DLA will end but whilst you are even temporarily disabled enough to stop you working, it's worth looking into? x
