i picket this up 2 days ago ,at the time i was told it can be powered by usb but it actually is only mains powered
is there a way this can be used for portable use
if not looks like i will have to return

no i think most external hdds require power source. i have seen a few without the need for them but most do. so for this particular model i think you need power source. hope that helps.

since this offer is over, any other good sized HDDs on sale right now?

There has been a discussion with regard to the formatting of this unit,is there anything wrong with using the 'quick format' method as described in the manual? Thanks.
