Can you power this from the PC?
No, you need to use the separate power supply which comes with the drive (this is pretty much the norm for most modern external hard drives AFAIK) ;)

EDIT: The Middleman beat me to it

If you want one that's powered via usb buy a 2.5" laptop external from stores or fleabay
If you dont ask for discount you don't get discount

The device is an external drive (i.e. doesn't fit inside your computer) and connects via a USB cable. This lets you move it around and connect it to different Windows computers.

I think he meant can you take the drive out of it's enclosure and use them independently?

I don't see why not - although this may involve breaking some sort of factory seal which will no doubt invalidate your Philips warranty. I'm not sure what the warranty position is, as the Hitachi hard drive inside is a separate unit in itself. I suppose it's no different to buying a ready-built computer whereby your warranty will be with the computer manufacturer (eg Packard Bell) and not necessarily with the manufacturer of the individual components (albeit that certain components may have a longer warranty than the computer itself).

Just some food for thought.

    Thanks for clarifying.

In that case you might as well buy the bare internal drive and save £8 - http://ebuyer.co.uk/customer/products/index.html?rb=18496646237&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=87668
