Eon Misleading Quotes? Please Help!

Hi folks,

I'm new to this forum, so sorry if this issue has been raised before, but I'm really hacked off right now and need some advice!

I recently switched my supplier from Scottish Power to Eon as the door to door saleswoman told me that I would save around £180 a year by doing this (I pay my gas and electricity bills quarterly and on time, and will continue to do so).

Since switching, a work colleague has advised me that this figure is likely to be completely wrong. They reckon that when Eon do their quotes, they don't take into consideration my dual fuel and prompt payment discounts, and so in reality any savings (or losses!!) I do make will be negligible.

Can this be right? Are Eon deliberately misleading people? Do all companies do this?

I do hope my colleague is wrong. The saleswoman seemed so nice and genuine (although she did remind me a bit of Cookie Monster from Sesame Street, lol!).

I would appreciate your feedback.

Thanks,

Mr Big

I think your colleague is right. As far as I know Scottish Power offer a prompt payment discount of about £150 per year (applied quarterly) and that does not appear to be included. As long as you do not miss a payment then the total costs are much closer.

Salesmen do indeed appear nice and genuine. Those who appear nasty and false are unlikely to be given the job in the first place.

Thanks Kim. I suppose what I'm really asking though is not whether the saleswoman mislead me, but whether Eon themselves did? She input the figures I gave her into her laptop and showed me the quote and the saving.

From what I've been told it's Eon that program their computers to ignore my dual fuel/prompt payment discounts when working out savings so it looks good.

    Can anyone confirm this?

I suggest you right to Consumer Focus and complain about their "Consumer Focus Confidence Code" and in particular section seven which explicitly does not allow comparison sites et al to include prompt payment discounts in their estimates.

This disadvantages companies with tariffs that are fairer. And it disadvantages the very customers that one would expect Consumer Focus should want to help.
  • cookie monster? as much as i am interested in your post i find the idea that you can see a human being as a "cookie monster" quite absurd!

Hi Mister Big and welcome to MSE :hello:

Now you have joined this site, why not use a couple of the comparison sites in the resource bar above and see for yourself if you can save money with a different supplier or tariff? :)

Yes, but most (if not all) of them will pull the same trick for the unwary the original post is complaining about. Their predicted annual prices are reasonable accurate. Their predicted savings are a nonsense that must be replaced by your own manual calculation of what you will pay on your current tariff.

    Hi Mr Big,

I don’t know a great deal about how door to door sales are calculated or made so I’ve had to make some calls to get some info on this.

When the agent went through the sale and filled in the details on her laptop, she will have selected your current supplier and your current tariff from a list (I would assume she asked you for the name of your tariff).

The tariff details we have recorded for each company are accurate and importantly have the relevant discounts built in.

Things like prompt payment, which are only paid if you pay on time are included, it assumes all customers will pay on time.

So as long as the correct tariff is picked from the list the quote should be accurate.

    Hope this helps. :)

Since the comparison sites usually state
    1. the current cost with current supplier/tariff
    2. the new cost with new supplier/tariff (which you agree is reasonably accurate)
    3. the difference

how do you think the savings claimed are a nonsense?
If the websites can accurately calculate the costs based on very complicated charging structures, I'm sure they are able to subtract one number from another and get a correct result

    Premier reread the OP's op.
(I pay my gas and electricity bills quarterly and on time, and will continue to do so)

The comparison sites DO NOT include Scottish Power's £150 per annum prompt payment discount in their calculations. This means their savings are £150 out when you are looking at quarterly payments.
