Quite frankly this debate is boarding on the rediculous when you say that someone who has a 60 year old tortoise and has looked after it for nigh on 40 years doesn`t know how to.0

In just the same way that a human can live for 40+ years on a diet of fast food, alcohol and cigarettes! Doesn't mean they are healthy or will live until they're 80 though!“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

Chameleon, I never said that you did insult me, you`ve been on the boards long enough to know the etiquette.
I agree that the import ban was about the best thing that could have happened but the ones that are still around need looking after and obviously have been or they would be dead long ago.
A tortoise is not just for Christmas.
Superrachy , who only joined the boards the other day and has so far posted 3 times made the above post directed at me.
He/she obviously didn`t read what i posted as at no time did I mention cat food.
Hopefully his/her 3rd post is their final.
Wizzasmum has also recently joined the boards and is a "tortoise expert", knows everthing about everything, and I would imagine, always likes to have the last word on everything.0 -
I just hope the original poster has not been put off giving us the next stage of her story by all this bickering.
If she keeps the tortie she may need more support and advice, and having read the above I wouldn't come back here!Give yourself a Chistmas bonus £14 a week!
Total so far £280 -

Well I was the first to respond to the OP,which I did in good faith.
From there it has sort of snowballed into people trying to score points off one another and insults.0 -

I thought that people weren't able to keep tortoises as pets in this country any longer? Or have I misunderstood and tortoises aren't for sale in this country any more? My parents had a tortoise when I was small, he was stolen from our back garden, I've always wanted another.Carpe Diem

Due to a loophole and Slovenia joining the EU, small tortoises (and sometimes bigger ones) are still avaialble to sell in pet shops and by breeders but under lilcence and in some cases with DEFRA documentation as the species is endangered. Unfortunatley if the sort of info given by the person with the old tortoise in the garden is heeded, then the vast majority of these tortoises will die before the age of a five. Adult tortoises imported pre 1984 were already formed and so the vital organs were not under such stress from bad husbandry as a babies would be. I sell baby tortoises but only to approved homes and to people who have the correct setups.
Hope this helped
