It would seem to me that tortoises have got a lot more sense than some of the posters on this thread.
If you put dog food in front of a tortoise it will either eat it or leave it,as it will about any food it is given.
To say don`t give them this and don`t give them that is nonsense.
If it likes it it`ll eat it.
As long as a variety of food is given there`s no reason not to try different things.
Our`s hibernates from Oct to April and is boxed up in shreaded newspaper and kept indoors in an unheated room.
(Once heard about a tortoise keep in a shed in the winter and the rats ate it.)
He`s never been to a vets but now and again the local tortoise society does a tortoise "MOT" (May & Sept.),checks them over, measures them, weighs them and also gives advice.0 -

Of course they will eat it if it smells good, not necessarily good for them though Tortoises have been living to a hundred years or more in the wild, not many in cpativity do this though. When a dead tortoise is dissectied the harm caused by feeding protein by some owners over the years is self evident, it's very upsetting really when you are involved in rehabbing. Did you know that 90% of imports from the pre 80's are now dead for this very reason and bad hibernation advice.
I've just been thinking of some comparisons re animals eating what they like and thinking that they MUST be good for them then.
There is dog's and chocolate - bromine, poisonous to dogs and shortens lives.
Parrots and the attraction to furniture polish - opps keels over dead
Mice and that lovely blue bait you put out for them, they adore that it is so good for them they go off and bleed to death - get my drift. It's dangerous to give advice on something you clearly do not understand.
Oh dear the good old BCG MOT's, now where are those figures for cross contamination!!!!!!!!
Thanks for your advise I will take it on board for my future work with these gorgeous misunderstood creatures. Now then, do you have any on breeding cos I might be doing that wrong too
Take care

Do you get your seeds from Shirl_the_Whirl on ebay? She is good value and all proceeds go the Jersey Tortoise Sanctuary, she makes no money out of them. Give her a try if she is around at the moment or email her on tortoisesanc@localdial.com
Take care

...you are an idiot. Go away and stop abusing your tortoise by feeding it cat food. Plonker.0

To the original poster
1) please take to a vet and scan for a microchip, and to get the breed and if possible gender
2) please ask the vets to use a UV light and scan to see if it's postcode/contact details, as it is common practice to write these on with one of the security pens you get to code bikes etc
3) please read the Tortoise trust website (www.tortisetrust.org) to try and read up on proper care
4) please put up posters and ask the vets for any local reptile resuces that may know who has lost it and of good ways to care for it well
5) please ignore all the people who say they let them eat anything and have had 1 for 40 yrs - they are dying a bit young at only 40 years!
Let us know how you get on, they are a steep learning curve, but very rewarding if you cannot locate an owner.
