Only been keeping a tortoise for 38 years.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating. :rotfl:
Your tortoise is still a TEENAGER but I expect if it died tomorrow you would pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself for having kept it alive so many years! When in reality you would have caused it's VERY premature death!!!“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

They used to ship them over here by the crate load where the majority didn`t even make it to the "pet shop".
There they were stuffed in the window until sold.
They suffered immense cruelty and hence the imports were halted.
When we aquired our tortoise,it wasn`t a baby,so although we`ve had it for 38 years, and it has been looked after very well in that time,it`s actual age is nearer 60.
Even in the wild very few tortoises survive unto "a great age".
There`s no such thing as a "tortoise expert" but for one to survive "in captivity" for so long is a feat in itself.
When you and the other "experts" have kept one for 38 years then maybe you can give yourself a pat on the back.0 -

And how do you know none of us have? You have no idea of our backgrounds/experience other than what we type. I'm also very well aware of the how the tortoise trade has evolved over the years.
Insulting and abusing people isn't going to endear them to you though, is it!“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

How long have you kept a tortoise?
If you cast your eyes back over this thread you`ll find that I was the first one to get abuse to which I`m entitled to respond.0 -

I don't actually own a tortoise as it's a lifetime commitment which isn't compatible with career/lifestyle but that doesn't mean I don't have a wealth of knowledge and experience of them
I can't remember who said what to whom now, and as far as I'm aware I didn't insult you either.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
So the abuse firstly directed at me is OK but not when I defend myself ?
You and the complete !!!!!! wouldn`t be the same person would you?
Try to remember that the assistance needed was for a tortoise and not some numpty trying to cause a stir. No-one is bothered how you feel, just the animal. You have been given excellent advice and are still winding people up with your nonsence. Why do you think that over 90% of tortoises imported pre 1984 died and the trafficing thus stopped? Think about it. Yours is still hanging on, nothing to be proud of when it dies aged 50 or thereabouts. I have taken several tortoises on that have been kept this way and although the owners thought they were fine it has taken upwards of five years for them to become fertile or to walk tall on tiptoes, some much longer. Of course you know so much better0 -

Having worked in a sanctuary in Antalya I can assure you that tortoises in the wild live a lot longer than this and those that die do so more often than not due to predation. The life they had was natural. I have had tortoises since a child so a lot longer than 38 years, but time is irrelevant. A tortoise being reared badly for 40 years is a sad case compared with a baby of 5 years being given excellent care. I would like to add that had your tortoise been a baby 38 years ago it would likely have died anyway under your regime as the organs were not already formed as your present tortoises were. This is why it takes so much longer to kill an adult.0 -
