  • Hi D+D
Have been following your thread, and said to myself "Oh nooo" when I read about the electricity bill.
I know ebaying/amazon have been mentioned before, but when I had an unexpected car repair bill I got pretty ruthless with mine and DS's clothes. Anything that hadn't been out of the wardrobe in the last 6mths went on ebay, books went on amazon - even 1/2 empty bottles of perfume & make-up sold (which was a complete surprise to me!)
Also I'm not sure if anyone mentioned the council tax? Just to make sure your getting the 25% single persons discount, and wondered if your council was one of the one's who let you pay over 10mths instead of twelve?

Im getting the 25% of my c/tax so that's the lowest i can pay on that.

Have listed quite a few things listed on ebay today, as want to pay this off asap to get the DD down quickly. Never sold on amazon yet, have heaps of VIdeos (but do these still sell?) I'm going to have to have a selling frenzy.

Still working on trying to get the BF to move in. (that'd free up some cash lol) :p

Amazon is really easy but check the sale is worthwhile as they take quite a big chunk. You just look up something you have on Amazon and click on the "One to Sell?" button. Then just input the ISBN number. About 20 times faster than ebay to list. No fees up front, fixed P&P.

Videos imho don't sell at all anymore. We ended up at a carboot offering 4 for a quid a couple of years ago. Only things that might are any rare music videos or something you just can't get on DVD.

I know you won`t get any money but videos sell in our charity shops, more so than dvd`s which tend to be three times the price.
  • Hey D&D so sorry to hear about the electric. I think it was me who suggested you check this, I normally do as I have been stung in the past.

I switched supplier and my direct debit was set at £65 a month (I'm electric only) which we knew was about right with our previous supplier and the new one was supposed to be cheaper. Without being asked they cut our DD by more than half, they notified us but DH didn't think to mention it. This was at a time when electricity prices were increasing and our usage hadn't changed!!!

We eventually discovered the arrears when we owed over £1500!!!!

Even if they had left us at £65 we still would have had arrears due to the increasing prices - I was furious.

This is why I always advise people to check this as the sooner you realise the problem the easier it is to deal with. It is best not to start a DMP with an unrealistic direct debit as you will only need to revise it.

To get ours sorted we asked them to spread the re-payments over a longer period, then started monitering our usage weekly to make sure we cut it and continued to keep it down. We supply regular readings to npower and ask them to adjust our bill each time. As we are using less than they estimate the debt is coming down quicker than anticipated. I can't wait to be debt free with them and to switch supplier!

    Hope that helps a bit.

  • Well folks, today i've cried and totally heart broken.

I'd never queried it before now, thought i'd found a cheaper supplier to switch to. So I contacted my current supplier just to get a final bill amount, and i nearly DIED. They said i owe then £368.43!!!

this spider is being washed down the plug hole again!!

Hi i dont know who you are with but it pays to shout and demand to speak to their line manager (be prepared for a long phone call mine was nearly an hour!) if you dont get any joy keep going higher!

Divide that bill by 10 months equals £37 ish so unless they are adding you curent estimated useage onto that monthly amount thats the only way i can see it being in the £80's per month.
Dont be afraid to give them a rollocking!

    Hi,

Things haven't been so good last few days, sorry not been in touch. Thank you all for caring. :o

Haven't spent any money this week as totally skint, and massive long phone calls sorting electricity, phones and childcare.

On the up again today, Car insurance changed and now reduced. Phone bills reduced and Npower can go to HELL! so sorry if anyone works for Npower.
