Upgrading my make-up bag! Advice please...

Hello all!

I have been using the same foundation, concealor, blush and powder since I was a teenager and had very little cash to spend on make-up.

Yesterday I tried some red Dream Matte Mousse by Mabelline and found it to be great as a replacement for my old crappy blusher!

This got me thinking that even though I now have about twenty times the weekly income that I had as a teenager, I have never looked further afield for make-up products!

So now I want to replace all the crappy old stuff that is in my make-up bag at the moment, but I need your advice on what are the best products to buy. I don't mind spending quite a bit on these products as I want them to last me and be good quality.

I am asking you money savers out there to recommend me some foundation, powder, blusher and concealor that can take my make-up bag out of its perpetual adolesence.

Thank you all! :T

P.S. Any other make-up tips or recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Sorry - pressed return by mistake then!!

    Try again ...

My favourite's of the above are:

    Foundation - Clininque Superbalanced
Concealer - Mac for a good cover, YSL Touch Eclat for under eyes
Blusher - Maybeline Powder with a good quality brush
Powder - I use No.7 Pressed but I'm thinking of getting a mineral one as I really need the SPF.

None of these things are cheap mind! I'd recomend a consultatin with clinique regarding the best type of foundation for your skin. Put it on your skin in the consultation then wear it all day and view it in different lights. If it suits you, you can go back and buy it.

Why not go into Boots, John Lewis or Debenhams and ask for the advice of the various counters......make a "plan of attack" and get your make-up done by a different counter each time? Then you will get a few freebies to try, and will also get an idea of the prices & what suits & what you like.

Get yourself off to a MAC counter, their staff are so helpful plus they're quite generous with their samples. With modern textures and ingredients for foundations and bases you shouldn't really need a powder and its more often than not a lot more flattering to the skin if you don't use one.

IMHO MAC and Ruby&Millie do the best concealers, Touche Eclat isnt a concealer, its a skin brightener/highlighter, personally I find it quite drying if I use it frequently around my eye area.

As for blushers, benetint by benefit is gorgeous and really natural looking. Origins 'pinch your cheeks' is nice too. As are MAC cream blushers.

Let us know how you get on, I love hearing about new makeup hauls :D
Just because you are offended, doesn't mean you are right
  • I don't really mind how expensive the products are- if they last a long time (both in terms of not needing to use much each day so not getting down them quickly and lasting on the skin all day) and are better quality than my current Collection 2000 and Miss Sporty  haul then I am willing to pay a fair bit of money!

I am going to use up the last of the foundation and concealor that I have got now and I will get myself to Debenhams in a couple of weeks time!

As requested, deeds, I will let you know how I get on!

    I've been Money Tipped!
If what you are using is cost effective and doing its job, don't be in a rush to upgrade. I'd certainly consider doing it slowly, and item at a time, and making it a ''treat'' or reward for good lifestyle and saving habits etc;)

Personally I'd start with foundation, if you want to upgrade. skin changes over time, and many foundations have other benefits (e.g. spf).

I'm not sure how cost effective my current stuff is because I do have to replace it quite often and I have to touch up my make-up every afternoon as it wears off throughout the day, so I'm using twice as much as I really would like to!

I know what you mean about upgrading slowly but I am a very all or nothing type person (usually all rather than nothing as well :o)! I think I will pop along to a counter and ask for some advice about my foundation and take it from there.

    I love:

Foundation - another vote for Clinique Superbalanced (and Estee Lauder Double Wear)
Concealer - for under eyes, I don't need this thankfully but my friends swear by YSL Touche Eclat (No7 do a cheaper version which is also good). For a spot concealer, you can't beat Rimmel Hide the Blemish!
    Blusher - Benefit Dandelion
Mascara - I use 2True, it is really brilliant and 3 for £5! :D But if pushing the boat out it would have to be Hypnose by Lancome
Lipstick - I love Clinique lipsticks (all of them)
Eyeshadow - Urban Decay has great staying power but Bourjois, Rimmel and No7 are all cheaper and pretty good - I will not spend lots on eyeshadow as I don't see the point
Lip gloss - I use Born Lippy by the Body Shop over my lipstick or on its own, I hate sticky gloopy gloss!

That's all I can think of for now!

Another vote for clinique superbalanced - I think foundation is the one thing not to skimp on.
