I wish the system was fair but it isn't and in practice people who need help more than I do do not recieve it - that doesn't mean I don't need help with washing, dressing, having food and general other things people take for granted. No one cares about wether you really are ill, disabled, need help or are desperate - it's very hard work being ill.
It is hard work to prove you qualify, very stressful, difficult - and according to their own rules after two tribunals I still don't recieve what I am entitled to but I was too tired to go to appeal again - which I was entitled to do but just couldn't manage, it takes years.
I wish I was making a dodgey claim - as then I wouldn't be so ill - and the claiming process wouldn't make me iller.
The rate of fraud on DLA is very low - it's a very difficult benefit to get.
No I am not naive and I know about DLA and the dodgy claims that are out there.
If people have the care and mobility needs they usually get the benefit, it is the minority who post on forums like this.0 -
Sorry had a bad 'moment' - shouldn't really take this off topic or make it personal - would just like to say that the only stats I know of show fraud on DLA at 0.5% (and underpayment at 2.5%). those were the DWP's own stats - granted the most recent I can find are from 2005 and maybe it has increased since then.0

Yes I know the figures but you know what they say about statistics!0 -
It seems to me that people in genuine need will still get the help that they need.
To be honest I think it is overdue that DLA/AA is changed because there are alot of dodgy claims out there.
sorry healy but one size does not fit all,
yes there are a lot of dodgy claims, but some genuine people do NOT get the help now when they need it from either DLA or social services who will be responsible for peoples care should these changes happen.
take my life for example, i need 24 hour care, i am bedridden, doubly incontinent and totally reliant on my husband/carer for my needs, even typing this.
my hubby worked 2 jobs until i took ill, i have blackouts, cannot feed myself, wash or dress myself and need my incontinence pads changed 5 times a day, i need frequent washes to prevent urine sores
who is going to care for me if i lose my care componant, and what happens to my hubby, he is my carer, i need him 24 hours a day 7 days a week
i had carers come in from social services at one point,
i was allowed 30 minutes in the morning and 1 hour at night, who the hell is going to do all the things my hubby does 24/7, not social services or any one else i can guarantee you that.0 -
Thanks for this-I have linked it on every UK forum I attend (and there's a few of them!)Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!0

I realise it is not perfect but would hope that those in real need would get more help from Social Services if the change happens.
Note I said hope because the money from peoples DLA could just disappear into a big black hole.0 -

Hi healy
yes in an ideal world things would be better, but i also think that most people who are worried about this have every right to be
my care componant helps with all the the extra things i need to help me
it helps pay the utility bills which are extremely high due to having to have heating on extra so i can keep warm, extra water for washing and bathing that i need, so if my care componant is taken away how do people like me pay for the extras that having a severe disability costs.
it is a very scary thought that during the winter months i will be freezing in my bed should this happen0 -

Please don't waste your time with the dafty above as there are some people who don't care at all about the predicament disabled and elderly people are in. The time they will care though is if they become disabled themselves and for their lack of interest or compassion what goes around comes around, or so the saying goes.
If you are referring to me I am not a dafty and I do not think you have any right to insult me.
As for the rest of your post I have heard it all before.0 -
Healy is not a dafty or naive, he is a regular on this board that offers disabled, elderly and everyone else good supportive advice.skcollobcat10 wrote: »Hello misty blue,

If you think that we don't care or don't have a clue what it is like to be disabled you are far from wrong. Although I am not disabled I have worked as a carer for many years looking after the elderly and disabled so I do know what it is like. I now work helping people with their benefit entitlements and I have found that most people who get turned down for DLA fill out the forms themselves instead of getting professional help with them.0
