Are you the tenant or the landlord?

thanks people, good advice and fair points.

Should have explained a bit more as to why i was a bit annoyed, first time the gas chap had already contacted me and said he would be at mine for 8.15am, i waited until 8.30am and left for work. He called me at 8.35am and said 'i'm waiting outside your house where are you?' When i told him i had to leave for work he saw his a*se, grumpily said said well i'll have to contact the LA and make other arrangements and hung up.

I have no time for people like that but as you say it's for my own safety so i shouldn't let my morals get in the way!!

    Regards

id just tell the letting agent to sort it, like you say why should you be put out especially as you have made the effort already, just tell them either arrange a time outside your working hours, or come round and wait for the check yourselves.

Its okay people having time off work, i know if asked for the time of,f they would let me but i would be docked the amount of time i was late, why should the op be docked money for having time off, for what the landlord needs to do by law.

Id stay at home if he would dock whatever i lose wage wise, off the monthly rent, but how many landlords would do that?

However reading a bit more of what you have posted if you are the landlord you are taking the p!ss, get it sorted or ask your letting agent to sort it thats what you pay them for.

Given that you've already made yourself available for the gas check and the LL's chosen supplier failed to turn up I would write to the LL and state that if you don't get it done by x you will employ your own person to do the check and deduct it from your rent. You can then ensure the person you employ turns up when its convient.

Thanks and wish i'd have thought of that earlier. Have called and left message with contractor to arrange inspection. Have emailed LA to let them know and also to inform that i have tried to accomodate previously and hope in future he will be a little more punctual :rotfl:

    Thanks everyone.

The LLs contractor did *not* fail to turn up, he failed to turn up on time - get real, less than 20mins late? Oh that I had people who were that punctual.;)

The LL is fully responsible for ensuring that the gas safety check gets done , the T is responsible for providing access or agreeing to someone else doing so on his behalf. "Make your own arrangements and deduct from rent"...cobblers, absolute cobblers.
    Edit:
Thanks and wish i'd have thought of that earlier..
    No, best that you didn't......

And *why* is the LL required to do this by law ? To safeguard the T.

For goodness sake, this seems like something where the LL/LA just can't win. If they had simply given the contractor a key & said "here you go mate, let yourself in" or even written & said "the contractor is coming, on xxx date & if you're not there, will be letting himself in by key " there'd rightly be an outcry, and yet the T can't sort out a mate or neighbour to let someone in or agree with the LA for a member of their staff to be there?

Guess you work for the sort of employer described by MichaelVintner above .

The bottom line is that where a T is not pulling together with the LL for this specific legal obligation to be met, a LL *can* go to court to seek an order for the contractor to be given access - guess who'll get to pay the court costs?
