Gas Safety Check - Should i go out of my way?

Currently renting and gas safety certificate has now expired. The Gas contractor has been in touch with me twice now and on both occasions could not accommodate me due to my working hours (8.30am - 4.30pm). Have now had a snotty letter off LA basically stating i have to get back in touch with contractors and get it sorted. Contractor is a stubborn ****, he is self employed, i am not and struggle getting time off. Should i really be going out of my way to accommodate him for a job that takes all of 10 minutes?

Just after advice before i call him back

There are so many Ts who post on here about LLs/LAs who don't organise gas safety certs.

    Anyway,

    (a) it should have been done * on or before* the expiry date

    (b) this is a measure designed to protect *you* from faulty appliances and death/injury from carbon monoxide poisoning so IMO you are being foolish.

(c)the hours that you quote are standard ones for plumbers, electricians etc - if you can't be at the property, simply give a key to a neighbour, a friend or to the LA and let the bloke do his job.

    Struth.

Ask for a first appointment and tell work you will be in late.

Far better than risking your health and upsetting your landlord for keeping to the rules.

I can understand that the OP would find it difficult to get the time off work.

I would politely speak to the LL and tell them if the check can not be done when you're available that you are happy for them to oversee it instead.

Surely if the LL thinks it's reasonable to expect you to make the time available they can do the same?
  • It's for your own safety. Unless you work for a right bunch of w*nkers how can it be difficult to arrange a time to get a gas safety inspection done.

Just go in late one day. I have never had a problem with any employer taking time off to get a gas safety inspection done.

Why do some people moan about having to do the most simple tasks.

Maybe you would rather have an unsafe gas appliance and end up in hospital or worst of all dead.

Unless you want to have the possibilty of being poisoned, yes go out of your way to allow it to be checked.

What would you do if you owned a property and it required work to be done.

Just give the key to the LA and have them release the keys, not a big deal, or as others have said if its going to take ten minutes, then have an appointment first or last thing, and just tell work you have a Drs appointment and make the ten minutes up by docking if off your lunch hour if need be, no point stressing over such a minor detail.

My LLL (with my agreement!) dropped off the keys with the gas man and he let himself in and did the job on a pre-agreed date. Neither LL nor I could be there, but the guy's business is reputable and I was not worried ...

When we had to have it done, the guy came on early Saturday morning and sorted it all out in about 15-20 min (new build flat). Can you ask what are the working ours of the contractor?

  • thanks people, good advice and fair points.

Should have explained a bit more as to why i was a bit annoyed, first time the gas chap had already contacted me and said he would be at mine for 8.15am, i waited until 8.30am and left for work. He called me at 8.35am and said 'i'm waiting outside your house where are you?' When i told him i had to leave for work he saw his a*se, grumpily said said well i'll have to contact the LA and make other arrangements and hung up.

I have no time for people like that but as you say it's for my own safety so i shouldn't let my morals get in the way!!

    Regards
