I have found myself in similar situations and have always thought that it was the fair thing to do to share the refund. However, guess what, when the boot is on the other foot - do I get a share? Yes you are right I don't. I sometimes think that I am one of the world's biggest mugs - or alternatively I just choose friends badly!!
Don't change - be true to yourself and your own conscience. Your "friends" aren't as honourable as you are but just remember what goes around comes around and there is always divine justice eventually!

Yes she should split the money as they are friends and it is the right thing to do.

  • I would have to split the refund but this is all academic anyway - most credit cards will cover any items that you pay for regardless of who the items are for (including flights). Earlier this year this exact thing happened to me when an airline went bump and I was stranded in a very small Eastern European airport with two friends. Halifax not only paid for the original flights but also forked out for the 1200 Euros that it cost to fly all three of us home with another airline (and this 1200 Euros went on my AMEX card not my Halifax card!!!). If anyone is ever in this situation, when claiming just make sure you use the words 'consequential loss' - works like magic :D!!

They should split it. Friends should not be counted in £'s

It should be split. If not, then Tash is personally responsible for refunding the cash payment that was made by her friend to HER, as the airline went bust, not Tash!

As the friend, I would take her to small claims as I had paid her as a trip organiser and not the airline, therefore Tash is liable...

I'd get the full amount back via the court, leaving greedy Tash with no money and no friend, rather than the 50/50 split she should have offered!
  • They were going holiday together, as presumably they like one another's company and were looking forward to a great time?

So really, Natasha's dilema is either split it and go on a £150 holiday with her bezzy mate, cementing their friendship and enjoying the holiday they've both been waiting for, or keep all the money and go on a £300 holiday alone, spending the whole time feeling a bit of a Scrooge and and wondering what Elanor is saying about her on "FaceTwitter" while she's away!

I know which I'd go for.

Tash clearly falls into that ilk of people for whom the word friend does not seem appropriate. It may be that Elena is technically outwith the official compensation sphere however she has handed over money to Tash who has received her money back.

Whilst technically not responsible for Elena's loss, there would be a great deal of friendship involved in Tash splitting the compensation with Elena and thereby sharing the loss that arose from a joint plan. There's not much friendship involved in leaving Elena to endure her loss completely but legality would side with Tash.

Tash, as is often the case in these dilemmas, ought to look at the value she places on friendship and so too ought Elena. The friendship might survive this financial glitch but it's difficult to see future trips and plans being free from this memory of financial handwashing on Tash's part. It makes friendship seem highly conditional and yet again we see how money and friendship are like oil and water. They don't mix well and usually end in separation.
  • If the friend was close enough to go on holiday with, I wouldn't want to lose them over the sake of £150, so I think she should split the cash.

Easy, just book another holiday and use the £300 as the deposit.
