If they are 'best buds' surely Tash would split it. Her 'friend' has lost money too...

It should be split - to agree to pay for your friends ticket and then when things go wrong not share the refund is not friendship. This is a moral, not a legal issue and Tash, if she is a friend, would not consider doing anything else.

I would be in two minds, lie and say ti wasn;t refunded and keep it or split it. Morally she should split it, but I reckon most people would do this so as not to have the fall out.

I don't see why she should have to give up the money! Why didn't the other friend pay on a credit card too, if she wanted protection as well!

I agree with those who have said she should offer to give her friend half, but the other friend should refuse to accept it......after all, friendship is worth more than £150 right......why would the other friend be willing to give up a friendship over £150?!

    IF YOU'RE SKINT......
Do I need it? Can I afford it? Can I find it cheaper anywhere else?

    IF YOU'RE NOT SKINT......
Will I use it? Is it worth it? Can I find it cheaper anywhere else?

Well, exactly. Friendship is a two way thing - if I gave my friend cash for a holiday and the company went bust, I would think it was my own tough luck. I certainly wouldn't dream of asking my friend to give me back half the money out of her own pocket.

The fact that she paid for her share on her credit card is irrelevant.

Although, having said that, I'm assuming most companies won't accept two credit cards for one booking, which muddies the water slightly. If you both have credit cards but elect to only use one for the sake of convenience or because they won't allow you to pay individually then I think it would be fair to share the refund.

It's my best friend, of course i'd half it. Just as I know that if it was the other way around she'd half it with me!!

Where has the value of friendship gone?! There wasn't even doubt in my mind. I know for a fact we'd both do it because that's part of what friendship is about!!

Why not put the £300 refund from the flights towards a cheaper holiday in Europe / UK for the both of them. They must have still had other money ready to spend on the holiday (hotels, food, entertainment, etc).

This is an airline. All airlines allow individual bookings. You might not be guaranteed seats next to each other, but if you check in online, you can usually arrange it easily enough.

Surely by accepting cash with the offer of providing a ticket they have entered into a contract and Natasha must either purchase a ticket for her friend or return the money. It is irrelevant that Natasha can get a refund, she still needs to fulfil her obligation under the contract to her friend. So by rights Natasha owes the full value of the ticket to her friend and should hand over the full refund not only half. Not a very good recipe for a continuing friendship which would probably be better served by a compromise of splitting the loss.

Yes, absolutely. Both lost out; both should receive compensation. A good friend is worth more than £150.
