I really am surprised at this. I have always been totally against this kind of thing. I mean, a staff discount is exactly that - a discount for staff, not for their friends and relatives. The member of staff has worked for numerous hours for the company, so has almost 'earnt' the discount. I really am surprised that people would do this. Waitrose seem to have the right idea then, sacking those who abuse the bonus.

So you think my mother abuses her staff discount by purchasing food that other people will eat?

She has been known to buy the odd birthday present too.

Your very thinking is muddled. The tactic that you claim is "not open to abuse" is totally open to abuse: so much so that you are complaining about it.

Thinking is muddled?! Saying that advising the OP to get a discount by wrong and dishonest means is wrong is muddled thinking? Care to explain...?
Your logic and mentality, even when you aren't "assuming" things without any justification, is very - how should one put it? - Microsoft in its approach.
Gosh, I have never heard that one before! My 'Logic and Mentality' as being very 'Microsoft'... I'm sure my mates will enjoy that one.

Panther, You are obviously very anti-Microsoft, through describing it's customers as illiterate and not intelligent. I will be satisfied the day you see the light, come to the right side and join the Microsoft Clan...;):D

You will be welcomed by a whole host of benefits, such as exclusive games, software, hardware and future possibilities.

I appreciate you may utilise cetain elements that other companies may bring through their products, and I am not attacking you for that (in fact the week I was forced to use an iMac, I was impressed with how the display moved so freely), but I urge you to appreciate more that Microsoft's customers are not all 'Illiterate' and 'Stupid', and that not everything Apple make is the best in the world.

Well, let me put it this way... Waitrose would certainly look down on what your Mother is doing. I will stop there as this is the techie board, and not the 'Food shopping & groceries', or 'Employment' board.

That's what an Xbox 360 is for.
    software

Like Logic Studio, Final Cut, Aperture and the best cross-platform versions of everything from Photoshop to iTunes?
    hardware

Oh, you mean I could buy a Zune?

I dared to dream it, and now it came true! :p
    future possibilities

Like the possibility of having to use a whole new OS in 18 months if Windows 7 doesn't do as well as Microsoft hope it will?
No, I do not work for Microsoft but boy, do I wish I do...

They had to lay off a couple of thousand people a few months ago, so you might be out of luck.

I appreciate your strong moral convictions, but I think you're reading far too much into all this.

PC Gaming and Console Gaming is incredibly different. I'm sure you can appreciate and understand that...
Err... Audacity is one of the best reviewed peices of audio software for Windows...and it's free!! Only one of the hundreds, if not thousands of music production software packages for Windows.
    Sony Vegas?!
    Bibble
and the best cross-platform versions of everything from Photoshop to iTunes?
    Very debateable.

    Bowling_for_Gold,

Thank you for illustrating so comprehensively the points I was making. :D

None of which (if you read what I actually wrote) condoned dishonesty.

You don't think things fully through before you expound upon them.

I strongly suspect that I shall find Windows 7 a lot more buggy and a lot less agreeable to use than Mac OS 10.3 Panther. But I shall keep an open mind and assess it fairly.

And if I like it, I shall buy it, install it and run it (natively) on my Intel Macs. :)

Heaven forbid that any Microsoft-lover will acquire Windows 7 wrongly and dishonestly - even if they manage to spell it correctly. :p

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

It would be total overkill on most computers, let alone a laptop..

Yes, one is relatively inexpensive and convenient, and the other is not.

Err... Audacity is one of the best reviewed peices of audio software for Windows...and it's free!! Only one of the hundreds, if not thousands of music production software packages for Windows.

I'm sorry, the answer I was looking for was "Pro Tools". ;)

Audacity is in no way comparable to a professional DAW.

Sorry again, the answer was "Avid".

I hate to do this to you, but the answer I was looking for was "Adobe Lightroom".

    Yeah, sorry about that!

Well you already know what I recommend, so we need not go there again.

If you're using less than 4 GB of RAM, no, there's not.

If you're consistently maxing out 4 GB of RAM, then yes, there will be a difference.

More RAM doesn't make your computer go faster, it just stops it from slowing down.

So that is your overall comparison between console and PC gaming?! Oh, wow.

    • I'm sorry, the answer I was looking for was "Pro Tools". ;)

Well, I think the examples I gave were quite commendable alternatives to the (normally overpriced) software you suggested, and, well seeing as this is a Money Saving site, I thought for basic requirements it is sufficient (editing, cropping etc etc). Also, I must say that I did put after the Audacity recommendation,
Only one of the hundreds, if not thousands of music production software packages for Windows.
I hate to do this to you
    Do you really, Marty?
The answer I was looking for was "Adobe Lightroom".
I thought, seeing as you can get that on a mac, and it is quite popular on that platform, I won't start up another debate. Anyway, Bibble is a fresh, new alternative, don't you think?

Oh yeah, and all this 'The answer is' stuff... well, the actual answer depends on the end-user's requirements, among other factors such as system specification etc... so you can't really have 1 answer...
