For that budget you can get a very good laptop. But you need to say what you want to do with it in order to get any meaningful recommendations.
Screen size, portability, programs you will be using?
Otherwise it's like saying, 'what's the best car I can buy for £8-10K?No free lunch, and no free laptop

I'd go for a 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro. Or maybe a 15-inch model from the Apple Refurb Store. You can also get quite a big discount if you can avail of Apple's student discount (and get a free iPod Touch).
Fantastic build quality, excellent battery life, beautiful displays, and great software. Probably not much use if you're a gamer though.0 -

I'd also recommend a MacBook Pro for general usage. Do you have anything specific you wish to do on the computer?Kavanne

Hey, if he'd said he wanted a computer for between £300 - £400, I'd have recommended a Dell too.
As it is, Apple own the high-end PC market.0 -
Some clarification - this is for a small business. I'm looking for the laptop to be as quick as possible and able to multitask easily.
I don't want an Apple because I'm not used to it and I need to fileshare easily between another laptop I have (slow cheap one)
This laptop will be my main business laptop, so reliability and speed is key.
I want a 17" screen ideally so I can retain reasonable portability when I work away from home.0 -

You can't do that really, unless the OP is a student. The student discount is meant for students because they can't afford a £900+ laptop... it's not meant for people who could perfectly well work with any other brand of computer, but get an Apple because they can sneakily knock a few hundred quid off Apple's already inflated prices. The quickest way to become a millionaire is start off as a billionaire and go into the airline business.

You might be able to get a thinkpad in that price range. Very sturdy - ugly as hell but solid. Great screen, powerful, and for me, I find it has the best keyboard layout.0

I'd go down the Lenovo route. 15.4 laptop but get a monitor for the office and maybe even a docking station for that price ex vat of course. as said previouly not the best looking but strong and reliable business machine. Some models come with HDMI.Always get a Qualified opinion - My qualifications are that I am OLD and GRUMPY:p:p0
