Thanx I will ask him about possibly getting bigger radiators then and if I might be able to have a new boiler. I'm just worried that because the water is working they may not do it and try to mend it instead.

I'll keep my fingers crossed it goes ok
    Thanx

  • :j Just had Cavity wall Insulation done today for free, although I am not on benefits I did turn down Disability Living Allowance a few years ago when I was going through treatment for Breast Cancer. Two weeks ago I rang the local grants department (I remembered from when I had central heating put in a few years ago, I got £250 cashback) The very helpful lady on the phone sent me a form for a Health professional to fill in, due to joint pain brought on by medication my doctor filled it in (for free!) they sent someone round yesterday to check what needed doing and as they had had a cancellation I was done this morning!!:T

    Hi Lady_K

Be a bit more assertive! Going on our experience, they won't try to mend it. I don't understand what you mean about 'the water is working, but the heating isn't'? If the boiler is not providing hot water then it is NOT working! End of. Needs replacing.

    :) Thanx

Well since I posted that another catastrophe has happened and now I have had to turn the water off at the mains so when the man comes tomorrow it wont be on as theres a big leak coming through the bathroom ceiling.

My brother tried to change a tap on the sink and the thick pipes under it were also leaking so he tried to tighten them up. It was 1 dissaster after the other. Basically the sink is now off the wall he leaned on it without the pedistal support :) tiles are smashed, the sink needs to be refitted and not sure what they will do about the pipes going to the taps they are leaking pouring out even when turned off, also the thick pipes were overtightened and leak more than before :) He did say to get a plumber to sort it all out and he would pay for it. I wont let him do that though because he meant well by offering to do it for me and thats the main thing he tried, accidents do happen

Tomorrow though I'll explain to the man that the water is off but if he really needs to check the boiler I will have to put it on for a bit while he does but I cant put a bucket where the leak is running so it will be awkward. Hoping he will say leave it but if he doesnt I guess it will mean hes going to be strict and will prob put it in to be mended instead
    Thanx

Oh, Lady_K, what can I say to you? I assume your brother is not a plumber? You let him attempt to do work he wasn't qualified to do, in your house - I should darned well think he's offered to pay for it, and so he should! You have home insurance which should cover the costs of the leak and the subsequent damage, but the fact that you didn't immediately call a qualified person to deal with it, but let your brother have a go at it, may invalidate any insurance claim. Hell would freeze over before I allowed any well-meaning relative loose with his tools to do a 'bodged job'! My DH wouldn't even attempt to repair the heating control in our boiler although he's an experienced mechanical engineer, because, he said, he hadn't got a spare part if the existing part broke.

I don't know what to say that will help you! Hopefully you've seen the installer and have got some definite information by now.

    Best wishes

Well my brother was just trying to help me out, really its my responsibility if it didnt go right. He isnt qualifed and I know that so I take all the blame I could have called a plumber but didnt I'm not going to let him pay for it, he just did his best really with all the best intentions.

The inspector from the installation company did come round and didnt want the water putting on but did look at the boiler. He has said they will fit a new one a combination condensing boiler not sure what brand. I asked if it would go in the same place as the old one in the loft and he said yes but it isnt the best place for it really. He said that the loft should have a loft ladder and a safety rail around the boiler for servicing and better flooring as there is only just bits of old wood on the floor as a pathway to the boiler. We then had a look where else it could go and theres only one place in the kitchen. I may loose up to 2 cupboards but at least it will be where I can deal with it myself without having to rely on other people going up the loft.

He didnt look at the controls and didnt mention if I'd have new ones. I also asked about the radiators but he said if he starts doing that I'll end up having to pay so I just left it at that I may get them done separately after its done. I'll ask the plumber that comes to sort the leaks out for a seperate quote on that but hes not going to be able to even come and look at it till late next week so I just have to keep turning the water on and off in the mean time

I'm very happy that he said I'll be getting a new boiler though :) he didnt even look at the draught proofing and didnt mention anything about it either so it may have been forgotten. He said its up to warm front to put the next stage in order so not to call them call warmfront. I asked how long, he said definitely not within the next 2 weeks but if I havent heard anything within 8 weeks call warmfront

He said when they fit the boiler and have to remove any cupboards whatever needs sorting out where they are removed will be up to me to put right. Basically they just fit it and thats it. Hope its noit going to be too messy to sort out afterwards as I wont be able to get up there to do it I'll have to get someone in to do that

Does anyone have any idea what boiler it might be?
    Thanx

    Hi Lady_K

In order to have the boiler in the loft you need to have a proper loft-ladder and flooring, also lighting. Fortunately we have that already - my late husband put the flooring and insulation between the joists below it back in 1991, also a light (it was because he wanted to use the loft for his hobby, miniature vehicles). We were given a loft-ladder last year and we got one of the local builders to install it for us at the same as we had the bedroom done a year ago.

The controls will be somewhere convenient, in the hall perhaps? Normally there shouldn't be any need for anyone to keep going up into the loft to see to it, even if had been put there! The controls are digital and wi-fi.

As to what make, I don't know. The young guys who came here on Monday said they are installing Baxi - but whether that's just their company or any others, I've no idea. They were cheerful, friendly and helpful, and we made sure all our questions were answered before they went. AFAIK it's all now passed beyond WarmFront and on to the installers. So you seem to have had a very different experience from the one we've had.

    Best wishes

Well he said the thermostats and the pressure are on the boiler so prob that cant be done via the wi fi thing. That is the main thing that needed to be done with ours topping the water up about once a year but still it had to be done in the loft, don't know if this can be done wi fi?

I do hope its a valliant or worcester coz the one I have now is a valliant and its been really good a german boiler and I have just heard very good reports on the worcester make. I wish I'd have asked him

I do have a light to the loft, maybe they could have fitted the rails needed I don't know but he seemed pretty keen to move it
    Thanx
