Hi everyone, I like to lurk on here when I have time so thought now is the time I'd come out in the open :) I've always enjoyed making cards but in the past I have generally used card making sets rather than create my own. The initial cost seems to mount up and I really don't know what to buy. I have a few card blanks, very small selection of papers and toppers but i'm still drawing a blank!

What would your top tips be for a newbie like me? What key items will need? Help me! :D

for putting eyelets on your projects, they are like a small metal ring reinforcer - you use the crop a dile to first punch the right size hole
and then to crimp the eyelet into place. or if you need to punch a hole in something, sorry I'm not explaining it very well am I! :o

Rainmac - The only other things I've done in my slow cooker are braising steak or steak & kidney type hot pot. Both are much the same as the lamb but without the mint sauce. I don't put potato in with the braising steak as I think it needs mash. I usually put peppercorns in the beef recipes. I was once told that it's the veg that takes the most cooking so I always put those in first and stir a couple of times during the day. I've also used it to keep veg warm when cooking for lots of people when hob lights are at a premium. Oh & thanks for book link - I've ordered.

Mary-op - glad it arrived OK made most with the cuttlebug & nesties which you have to buy separately. Just shout when you want more & let me know what colours - I may have plain circles by then!:rotfl:

Flourgirl - thanks for slow cooker links will investigate later

Hi Taypier and welcome to the thread ;)

My initial essentials would be double sided tape, a craft knife and mat, a selection of coloured papers and card for co-ordinating colours and some sentiments (you can buy sheets of die cut wordings from craft shops). It's certainly not a cheap hobby as you have discovered and I have spent hundreds and hundreds over the past year I've been doing it!

As you're just starting out - it's probably best to think of a person or occasion you have coming up and try to focus the card on that rather than just randomly throwing stuff together ;)

blogs are a great source of inspiration too!

Thank you - that's the best price yet.

Taypier - Lots of different coloured card/paper is really essential IMO. When I started out I went to a good craft shop that had a big range of papers and had a deal where you could mix and match any a4 sheets in a box ( that holds a ream - the size of 500 sheets of normal paper). I crammed mine full of different papers. I added more of silver mirror, regretted not getting enough black, and got different textures of whites/creams so I could fold them to make my own cards. This cost £4.99.

Whenever it's someones birthday etc and Christmas, get everyone to give you their cards. I pull off embellishments, ribbon, toppers and all sorts. Some cards even make good 'backing' papers for new cards.

Any scrap of ribbon I keep (eg my box of thorntons came with a brown one!), the Christmas crackers had gold ribbons on. I keep everything!

I'm not sure it's money saving, but I buy the Do Crafts goody bags once in a while. They are £15 and have over £30 worth of stuff (supposedly). I usually get mine from a shop after they are old and they reduce them to £9.99. You get things you might not normally have used or tried before.

My crafting things I wouldn't be without:
    • Decent scissors
    • Double sided tape, glue dots (I prefer the smaller ones) and foam pads
    • Quickie glue pen
    • Silver mirror card (I find whenever I can't find the right colour for matting then silver is a life saver :o)
    • Ultra fine glitter (but I'm obsessed with glitter)
    • Trimmer (I have a xcut)
    • A pack of round flat back gems.
    • Corner punch
The above are all the things I have on my desk all the time.

Thanks Lyndach - I think I'll go and get one tomorrow and see what I can do with it!

Furrypig - lovely card. Did you use a nestie for the fancy scallop edging -it's gorgeous.

    Thanks Glittermum
