use by dates usually have a little safety margin built into them. use by date is about food safety rather than quality. best before dates relate more to food quality.0

have you taken the temp of your fridge? best way to see if its working all the time. Is put the probe into the middle of full pot of butter/2 litre pop that has been in the fridge for a few days as this should be at the same temp as the fridge air when the door has been closed for a while.0

Thanks for the useful suggestion but my fridge appears to function normally for products from Waitrose, M&S, and Sainsburys.0
