Just seen this post, and as it happens I am on O2.minerva_windsong wrote: »Are you on O2? Because my boyfriend and I both got that text on Sunday within a couple of minutes of each other, and we are both on O2. I can't help wondering if they've either given out a job lot of numbers or someone's managed to obtain a list of them...
My general advice? If you don't know the number don't pick up the phone. If it's that important they'll leave you a message.
Hmmm.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0 -
I recently received this e-mail in work from our IT department - this may be the cause???
You may or may not be aware that from early next week all UK mobiles will be on a directory which means that anyone will be able to access your number for the payment of a small fee. This means that you and all your friends and family who have UK mobiles could be swamped by unsolicited messages and calls. If you do not wish to be on this list you must unsubscribe.
It is easy to unsubscribe but it must be done before the beginning of next week to make sure that you are ex directory. Removal is recommended by the BBC - see link below.

To remove your number go to the link below:
http://www.118800.co.uk/removeme/remove-me.html
Select the home page then select ex directory.
You need your mobile phone with you as they will immediately text you a code which you must then re-input to become ex-directory.
Does anyone know if this is real i dont like the look of the web site says you cant contact them by phone or text just by email??:jFriends are like fabric you can never have enough:j0 -

It shouldn't be anything to do with this as with this system 118800 doesn't give your mobile number to anyone, but contacts you first and asks if you would like to receive a call from the person. You can choose whether to accept or reject, and if you reject it, then the person calling doesn't get your number anyway.
I agree that this sounds like a prank rather than a scam - did your mobile record the number the call came from?0 -

I get a text like that every so often, and have always assumed that it's a typical 'phish;' a company just sends the message to a long list of generated numbers and if they are sent/received then the game is on, and if they bounce, so what as long as they get a fair amount of responses back!

Yes this is real. I heard it n the radio a few weeks ago and the BBC breakfast team did a program on this a few weeks ago as well....0 -
Sounds like it could have been this scam:

Have you registered lately to fill out tax returns online?0 -
Both people who got these calls say they haven't got a passport, could that be what its all about - fake passports. Sorry I have a nasty suspicious mind & that seems a link!0

As far as I'm concerned, if I don't know who it is calling, they get the Red Button. If it's that important, they can talk to my voice mail.If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0

Has anybody had a text from UKBA confirming their appointment reminder booking ref xxxxx, from the Public Enquiry Office - Croydon (date is for 4/11/09) and to please arrive 30mins early and telephone 03001238895??
I'm not particularly bothered as it's obviously some sort of scam or mistake, but I've googled the number and it appears to be some sort of bio-metric testing appointment that keeps people on the phone for ages or they get through immediately and get an appointment
