  • sounds like a phishing scam to me - they called at that time in the morning hoping you would be so disoriented you would hand over all your details without thinking. not a very professional set up by the sounds of things though! glad you didn't tell them anything :D

Its not a scam as in someone trying to get your credit card or personal details, its just a prank call. Someone who knows you, be it friend or foe, has themselves paid for a premium rate call to wind you up. You can find these "services" in small ads and the back of Sunday supplements. I really wouldn't worry about it. Did they actually ask for your credit card details? Some of my mates from work got me and another bloke with similar stuff. I had a parcel that needed delivering (oh no i didn't) and they couldn't find my house and needed me to sign for it and pay the delivery man. It wasn't a scam trying to actually get my details, it was just to get me shouting back that i hadn't ordered anything and wasn't expecting a parcel. The one i got was actually a pre recorded one with gaps left in for me to answer in, and the bloke just kept on shouting. I realised it was a wind up and hung up straight away. But my poor friend who got the "angry dad" prank call shouting "You've got my daughter pregnant" didn't realise and spent a good 5 minutes trying to calm down an angry tape recording. :)

I wouldn't worry. Its just someone's idea of a joke.
  • Was the call on your mobile? - the amount of websites that ask for a mobile number when your ordering is vast - I normally change a digit on mine and use reputable companies but the other day I got a text explaining that I could get compensation for my accident if I texted this number back so clearly I've put my number in somewhere dodgy!

Are you on O2? Because my boyfriend and I both got that text on Sunday within a couple of minutes of each other, and we are both on O2. I can't help wondering if they've either given out a job lot of numbers or someone's managed to obtain a list of them...

My general advice? If you don't know the number don't pick up the phone. If it's that important they'll leave you a message.

It wouldn't be HMRC calling you to begin with...it would be UKBA (UK Border Agency). They don't call anyway...they just raid your house/work. :)

HMRC would definatley not be ringing you at this time. Definately something dodgy going on!!!!!!!!! Are you sure it wasn't someone you know trying to be funny. If not theres someone out there trying to get your details.
Are you sure you don't have a friend or relative who might think this was funny??
I've been scratching my head, and I can't think of anybody who would do that - at least I don't think so, not at that time of night! :p

I'm not worrying really, it was just un-nerving, and it kept me awake for a while after. Talk about ruining somebody's sleep, I am tired today - the mobile goes on silent tonight, !!!!!! it.

I got the same call at 3:10 this morning, I assumed it was a wind up but was very annoyed as I have family fighting in Afganistan. I'm also British born & don't have a passport, the call came through on my 'spare' phone & nobody has the number. I'm with Tesco mobile, I'm afraid I gave them an earbashing & closed the call.

Out of interest, did they sound a bit like Alan Carr - but not so camp?

And did the hold music sound like cheap reggae music?

    It's so vivid now.

  • I recently received this e-mail in work from our IT department - this may be the cause???

You may or may not be aware that from early next week all UK mobiles will be on a directory which means that anyone will be able to access your number for the payment of a small fee. This means that you and all your friends and family who have UK mobiles could be swamped by unsolicited messages and calls. If you do not wish to be on this list you must unsubscribe.

It is easy to unsubscribe but it must be done before the beginning of next week to make sure that you are ex directory. Removal is recommended by the BBC - see link below.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/working_lunch/8091621.stm

To remove your number go to the link below:

    http://www.118800.co.uk/removeme/remove-me.html

Select the home page then select ex directory.

You need your mobile phone with you as they will immediately text you a code which you must then re-input to become ex-directory.

Thanks for info kitty. Unfortunately out of service at present, but I'll make it my priority to unsubscribe.
