Ever since mankind was created/born/evolved (delete as applicable) we have looked for meaning and order. We found it in deities and myths, and we based ourselves around it totally.
We went to war over it yes, but without religion there would be nothing to go to war over, we wouldn't advance, and the human race, if it had never looked up at the stars and gave them human attributes would still be stuck in a cave because there was no noble cause to convert all other tribes to.
Without a god figure there is no philosophy, as there is only one fixed truth.
Do you really believe that? The dark ages in Europe were "dark" because the Christian church outlawed innovation. It wasn't until the end of the middle ages - the rennaisance - when the church began to lose it's grip over the majority of people that any real innovation was resumed. Look at the scientific/literary/artistic advances that occurred after then.
I am also unsure that the shameful atrocities occurring in the name of the "noble cause" of the church by missionaries in Africa and south America is worth bragging about, and certainly not something worth aspiring to.
It's only a game

Not at all, I'd be perfectly happy to follow a religion that could be proved truthful, honest and unbiased.
On the last census, I declared by religion to be Jedi. You know why? Because there is just as much provable evidence that Jedi could exist as there is that a god could exist. Some may say Jedi is nothing but Science Fiction, but to be honest, so is the bible. The only difference is that Science FACT can disprove most of the writings in the bible...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

hI Swiss ToniThe problem with humans is we're murderous lying treacherous finger pointing apes and say anything to justifiy our pathetic deeds.
This deserves a thankyou in itself, as it is such an inditement on the truth of the human condition :T
You will probably find however that very few aetheists agree with you as they always like to see themsellves and the human race in a better light than they really are. Much as i enjoy the genius works of Camus, even he, had some airy fairy view of the human race , despite living throgh the German occupaton of France.
However, much to your possible surprise, this is exactly the biblical view of man and his plight. Paul in Romans talks about his utter inability to do the right thing
and is utter despair in being in such a condition.
The question that is being basically asked in this thread is : Would the world be better off without God ?
Actually a more deeeper and poignant question would be:
Would the world be better off without Man?
The answer is an emphatic yes!
Would the Ozone layer have been damaged ?
What about the Green house effect ?
Who has brought many animals to the brink of extinction ?
Who kills for their own pleasure, satisfaction vengeance?
As you rightly point out who uses religion/creed ,politics history to kill or get their own way?
Man
one more point- Does Paul , in thebible have an answer to what/how he can be saved from such a plight ?
He does and it can be found in romans 7:25-immediately after his question!
Best wishes you rotten hell hole of a Sinner.:D

But the simple truth remains that mankind has always had religion. Religion drives wars (although there was a notable exception that was driven by the theory of evolution) and wars drive innovation and adaptation.
Obviously I am not in favour of killing people, but that is history, and there is no point in ignoring it. I don't believe that religion is inherantly bad despite all it has done, or science either despite the weapons it has made. This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine:kisses2: Fiancee of the "lovely" DaveAshton :kisses2:I am a professional ebay seller. At least the New World Translation from Jehovah's Witnesses is true to the earliest scrolls available and therefore in my eyes THE one to have, and at no cost to the receiver....unless you want to make a voluntary donation that is.
Lolol...the NWT contains changes to support Watchtower doctrine. The most obvious example being the 'name' 'Jehovah' which has been inserted throughout the New Testament (where it never existed in the original manuscripts).0
